A 12 year old was recently harassed to the point of suicide by antis in one of the fandoms a friend of mine is in. All because of fanart of two adults hanging out together. One of the characters was underage in the early days of the canon but, again, is now an adult. I've been watching the drama from afar and just feel sorry for people who have the misfortune to be in fandoms with these sorts of maniacs. You either can't participate at all, or you risk yourself getting doxxed and harassed. Neither option is very good.

First of all, that's terrible. Second of all, this is one of many reasons why 12 year olds shouldn't be hanging out in the same fandom places as older teens and adults. This is not a knock on 12 year olds, but on whoever is supposed to be taking care of them. You wouldn't leave a kid alone in a bar. Don't set them free in the cesspool of the internet and hope for the best.

12 year-olds need outlets too. Obviously, as with all things in life, it doesn't always turn out well. But lots of people discovered their creative sides wading in the 'cesspool'.

There's really nothing at all wrong with a 12-year-old being active in fandom. I was online in fandom from a far younger age than that and never encountered any problems at all outside of accidentally clicking on stuff that was squicky to me at the time. The internet (and especially fandom) really is not such a cesspool that the average 12yr old should have any problems. In fact I would argue the opposite, that being able to interact safely with older teens and adults and explore things like sexuality and Real Life Stuff, is fucking amazing for tweens and teens.

This isn't a problem of kids not belonging in fandom. This is a problem of fucking bullies targeting middle schoolers.

Yeah, no. You don't drop a kid off alone at a bar because a band they like is playing there and expect drunk strangers to watch out for them, and you don't give them unrestricted access to the internet with no supervision and expect the anonymous fandom hordes to even recognize that little starfirespacehugs7 is a 12-yo, let alone have her back. Children have guardians for a reason. Fandom has age-appropriate outlets. If a child is posting their art somewhere where people are going to accuse them of being a pedophile, then the adults in that child's off-line life have failed them.

i agree with you 100% but at the same time i'm thinking how in the world do you keep a 12 year old out of these sites? i feel like kids will definitely find ways of getting into a blocked website if they really wanted to. it just makes me really glad i don't have kids and that the internet wasn't as big as it was when i was that age.

You can't expect drunk strangers to watch out for a kid at a bar, but if one of those drunk strangers verbally abuses the kid, or hauls off and punches them, or whatever, that is still the drunk stranger's fault. They're still responsible for their actions. There might be some measure of responsibility that falls on the parents, but "well, they shouldn't have been there in the first place!" isn't actually a valid excuse for attacking someone.

The same goes for shrieking internet bullies. They shouldn't be harassing people, period. They are the bad actors here - the fact that the victim was 12 in this case means it has more weight in public perception, but they're the ones in the wrong, and they would be just as in the wrong if their victim had been 16, or 22, or 82.

Congratulations! You've manage to out-troll the "Han Solo is overrated" secret.

As someone who read adult novels as a child, maybe nine or so, featuring abuse and horror, and was perfectly sheltered and safe otherwise, I kind of agree with one side of your story: A friendly child that is cared for may of course supplement their mental diet with media made for adults -- in fact, how else are you ever going to learn to "adult" otherwise?

But not all children are friendly to others, and not all adults are friendly to children. So supervision and care is an absolute must with regard to the 12-year-old. That is...clearly not happening, dude, and you know it.

Can you provide any concrete details? I'd like to push back against the tendency of tumblr to decide just about anything is ~problematic~ these days.

I'm afraid I've misplaced the links to the blogs that had all the screenshots and info on what happened, but it probably wouldn't be too hard to find in the tags. It's the Gorillaz fandom on tumblr.
