I found Frozen superior. Sure, Moana had a great message and I liked the epic end-scene, and the theme of traveling and freedom and all. But Moana herself was a stereotypical plucky princess, and didn't have anyone interesting to rib off of the entire time (sorry, I thought demigod dude was ugly and obnoxious, and the chicken wasn't a great animal sidekick either). I couldn't believe they were doing a stupid grandmother plotline that's been done ten thousand times in Disney movies - actually, the whole family dynamic felt really predictable with the overprotective dad, too. The climax with the grandma's ghost fell flat. And - I have to say it, I'm sorry, Lin Manuel Miranda - but I found the music really boring beyond the "I am Moana" theme track.

On the other hand, Frozen could have built its plot better, and its antagonists. I think it would've worked better with positing Elsa more of the antagonist, as was originally intended. But nonetheless, I think Elsa is a really interesting female lead, in a more "mature" role as queen, and the "Let it Go" sequence still gives me shivers. The cast was fun, too. Ana was cute, and while inherently certainly not any cuter than Moana, she had a better ensemble of fun characters for cute rapport and character-building. I did not like the snowman, but he was still a step above the chicken. Plus, the music overall was a lot more fun to me. There are one or two bleh songs, but there were multiple songs that I really liked, so that's something.
