I like them both, but I do like Moana a little more.

It doesn't surprise me at all, but I agree that Moana is the superior movie. Moana is now my second favorite Disney movie after Lion King. It is really well done.

I found both of them equally... okay. It's been a few years since I've been able to get fully invested in an animated feature. Coco, though, broke the mold, and is superior to both of these films.

It wasn't even the character designs that bothered me the most (though I did hate them), it was the utterly lifeless settings. It didn't look like intentional symbolism, it looked cheap.

I dislike pitting films against each other. I enjoyed both.

I don't understand the 'sameface' comments when it's brought up between Anna and Elsa. Like... they're siblings. I've known a lot of siblings who could have been fucking twins. My friend in HS had six sisters and they were like someone had used the frigging clone tool.

While I adore Elsa and "Let It Go" (I never got tired of hearing that song everywhere), Moana is a far superior movie. My whole family enjoyed it and that rarely happens.

I like them both, I did enjoy Moana more though but I don't hate Frozen because I liked it more.

I wish they both would have flopped. I'm tired of Disney and all that they stand for.

I liked Frozen better. Moana I skipped whole scenes out of boredom. "Yes, you know who you are. I get it. I don't care."

Shiny was the only good part of Moana.

But, then, I haven't really loved a Pixar movie since Toy Story 3...

Frozen felt more structured to me. Maybe that’s not the right word . . . Moana felt like you could tell this story in an hour, or you could tell this story in 100 episodes, and it would have the same amount of relevant, necessary content either way. Frozen felt like it was built on a specific progression of events that couldn’t be added to or subtracted from without changing the story. I like when plots fit together like that, if only because I’m so bad at writing that way myself.

I found Frozen superior. Sure, Moana had a great message and I liked the epic end-scene, and the theme of traveling and freedom and all. But Moana herself was a stereotypical plucky princess, and didn't have anyone interesting to rib off of the entire time (sorry, I thought demigod dude was ugly and obnoxious, and the chicken wasn't a great animal sidekick either). I couldn't believe they were doing a stupid grandmother plotline that's been done ten thousand times in Disney movies - actually, the whole family dynamic felt really predictable with the overprotective dad, too. The climax with the grandma's ghost fell flat. And - I have to say it, I'm sorry, Lin Manuel Miranda - but I found the music really boring beyond the "I am Moana" theme track.

On the other hand, Frozen could have built its plot better, and its antagonists. I think it would've worked better with positing Elsa more of the antagonist, as was originally intended. But nonetheless, I think Elsa is a really interesting female lead, in a more "mature" role as queen, and the "Let it Go" sequence still gives me shivers. The cast was fun, too. Ana was cute, and while inherently certainly not any cuter than Moana, she had a better ensemble of fun characters for cute rapport and character-building. I did not like the snowman, but he was still a step above the chicken. Plus, the music overall was a lot more fun to me. There are one or two bleh songs, but there were multiple songs that I really liked, so that's something.

did I write this secret in my sleep? I mostly rolled my eyes at the "Frozen fever" at the time, but seeing Moana getting paid dust by comparison when it's a -significantly- better movie is maddening. children have terrible taste.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-10 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
I think Moana was the better movie, but Frozen had (and still has) the better marketing.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-10 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly thought Moana was kind of dumb. I guess it'd be fun enough for six-year-olds, but it doesn't seem like the kind of movie that adults would like. But to each their own.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-10 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
I prefer Moana as well, but seriously? Get over it. Disney movies are made for kids, not grouchy fandom nobodies who do nothing but complain. Kids prefer Frozen, and so what?

(Anonymous) 2018-04-10 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
I actually thought Moana was formulaic and boring, whereas from Frozen, I really appreciated the sister story and introduction of a brooding introvert into the line of Disney female royalty. Funny how opinions can be different, huh?

I haven't seen Frozen but Moana was really boring to me.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-10 11:33 am (UTC)(link)
Both movies have their strengths and their flaws. But Frozen was a winter-themed movie released over the holidays with snowman and reindeer sidekicks already built in. It was designed to be a marketing goliath in a way that Moana wasn’t.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-10 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Moana is by far the superior movie, but Frozen succeeded for one reason and one reason alone: Elsa had superpowers and it was cool as fuck.

Elsa is actually my favorite Disney princess, but I fucking hate the movie overall. It was garbage and Elsa deserved a better film with better characters and plot.
