The sad thing is that these imagines that people fart out in twenty minutes get exponentially more comments than fics that people spent actual time and thought on. I honestly feel like longfic is becoming rarer because the short shelf-life of fandoms + the far greater popularity of low-effort """"fanworks"""" means that it's not worth it to put in the effort to write and post it just to get a handful of kudos and maybe a comment about how your ship is garbage.

Exactly.

Which is why I write fic for the drawer now. If I'm being brutally honest, it's not worth spending the extra time to edit up a rough draft of a 100,000+ word fic anymore that took me a few months to write when if I'd just posted it as an "imagine", it would have gotten a lot more feedback. I've always written for myself, so I will always be writing, but posting? Nope, or at least, until the general fandom winds shift again to appreciate effort.

NAYRT—what fandoms are you in that these are so common? Maybe I just don’t follow a lot of people who post them? Idk.

Cynical thought: 1. write your draft for the fic that you want to write. 2. Post an imagine of the plot on Tumblr. 3. If it gets popular say "hey I'm totally gonna write this fic now" and ride the popularity of the Tumblr post as you polish and publish the chapters.
