Assuming this isn't a troll, it's not that Americans don't realize they didn't invent apple pie, it's just that if you're doing a show about American pies, apple pie is one of the quintessential pies in American culture.

Kind of like how the British didn't invent tea, but it's considered a quintessential part of British culture.

Drop the mic.

So I'm going to assume you missed the bit where the secret says 'it's a staple dessert in the uk as well as across Europe'.

Brits drink tea. But if I was watching say a Japanese programme about tea then I would not expect them to ignore their own relationship with tea and just be like 'oh it's British!'

What if you were watching a Japanese program about tea and they had a segment about tea in Britain and they were going through specific types that were popular in Britain and didn't mention English Breakfast tea because it began in America? That would be weird wouldn't it?

Seriously, this. Context is everything.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-13 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
But they did mention that America has that relationship with apple pie. Doesn't mean that Brits think of it as American.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-13 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, your analogy doesn't really work. Remember: the theme was American pies. Just because apple pies are eaten in the UK and Europe doesn't make it not-American, or not really an American staple. A better analogy would be if the Japanese were making a show about British beverages and didn't mention or include tea at all because tea originated outside of Great Britain and is a common beverage across Asia.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-13 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
But they wouldn't. Because tea has a much more immediate context to them. I mean Britain is heavily stereotyped in Anime but tea doesn't play a huge part in that.
