I think more important than recreating exact stories or visuals - understanding what made those stories and visuals to the audience in the first place and trying to stay true to that is the most important thing in an adaption. Other than that, I want it to be firmly connected to the original canon, but if it must diverge or change things, it can definitely earn that by staying true to the themes.

IMO the Series of Unfortunate Events Netflix show has been walking this line well.
