How would you feel about a fanfic where...

(Anonymous) 2018-04-14 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
the canon love interest turns out to be a psychopathic murderer so your OTP can get together?

I'm contemplating writing something similar but I have a feeling it's the kind of thing most people would hate. What do you guys think?

It would be hard to do it in a way where it didn't feel like egregious character assassination

Eh. I prefer they just ignore them.

Hard pass.

I'd rather the canon LI just get ignored instead of bitter shippers pulling that crap, even if I like the ship in question.

If you could find a way to make it fit the characterization

(Anonymous) 2018-04-14 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
It would be possible. Eobard Thawne masquerading as the love interest, Angel turns back into Angelus, Bella Swan is overtaken with bloodlust, Hannibal is usual self, Faith Lehane reverts, etc.

What's this stuff you're saying about Faith? Grr! Argh!

But no, seriously, that kind of approach makes more sense than just rewriting a canon love interest out of nowehere.

I could maybe see it working if the canon love interest is a psycho murderer who actually wants the OTP to get together. Like, maybe s/he targets people who would harm the pair, and is sort of like a twisted guardian angel/matchmaker or something.

Unless there's some actual canon support for the canon love interest being a murderer, hard no. It feels like a really cheap plot device to get your OTP together. Like... so lame and flimsy that I'd think the author is too lazy/incompetent to write a credible, interesting scenario for their OTP, and I'd doubt that the story could be any good because they've already cut corners in the plot. And I'd think this even if I, too, were rooting for the author's OTP.

To be honest it sounds awful, unless the canon love interest is already suspected of being a psychopathic murderer in canon.

TBH there are ways to write that kind of plot without going full Ron the Death Eater, but it'd be a hassle and it'd be easier to just ignore the canon love interest or have a throwaway "oh yeah they broke up who cares" line.

As long as you wrote it well, that's fine with me, since I'm also there for the non-canon OTP.

Well written being:
- crazed canon character still adheres to main canon ways, and you begin a slow spiral/slowly reveal the madness that maybe stems from some scenes in canon (i.e. they're always nice but the quickly and briefly snap at someone, and that has happened at least once or twice in canon)

My biggest issue with these is that character C (non canon OTP) often becomes a shoulder for B to cry on or shield themselves from A. I don't know why, but it bugs me. But that might be ssomeeone else's preferr3d trope (H/C).

I GENERALLY ignore the canon relationship (I pretend it didn't happen/ it didn't last, etc.). However, it sounds like the deranged character is a major part of your plot?

Probably hate it.

If you did a little disclaimer that yes, it was an AU, not character assassination or homebrew 'meta' - and Canon LI got some fun, campy, chew-the-scenery moments - I might give it a go.

But if you just want to get a noncanon couple together, there are ways less likely to infuriate...

I'm not saying it can't be done, but what I hate the most is when characterization and canon are shit on for no good reason. If you can find a respectful and believable way to undo what kind of person that canon love interest is, that's one hurdle (people don't just wake up psychopathic murderers one day, after all). But it can't be the reason OTP gets together, because that would make it obvious. You'd have to have them get together separately. You might even have them interact with Love Interest individually, noticing things, but not starting a romance then.

I mean, it's easy to turn Love Interest into a psychopathic murderer so OTP can get together. It's harder to do that in a way that doesn't make it so damn obvious.
