What freaks me out about the story is what Kreuk said about her involvement with it, how she just took some of their self-help courses and then parted ways and had no idea there was anything weird going on. It makes me wonder how many cults currently exist that are masquerading as totally normal self-improvement organizations.

A shitload of them (but also, she was probably lying)

I kind of assume they seem normal and super nice at first in order to draw people in. There was a documentary that talked about how cult leaders operate and how they identify people who are more susceptible to their influence. A lot of people are invited to the bigger social events, and then from there they will choose people to invite to smaller, more exclusive events and introduce them to mentor figures who will try to befriend them and try to influence them directly.

A lot, honestly.

Hell, I even found a listing for a self-improvement workshop on EventBrite. A squint revealed that it was being hosted by the Church of Scientology. I can totally see people going and having NO idea.

(I thought about writing to EventBrite, but I'm not sure how much control they have over what gets posted, if it's something they have to post or more of a tag.)
