I kind of assume they seem normal and super nice at first in order to draw people in. There was a documentary that talked about how cult leaders operate and how they identify people who are more susceptible to their influence. A lot of people are invited to the bigger social events, and then from there they will choose people to invite to smaller, more exclusive events and introduce them to mentor figures who will try to befriend them and try to influence them directly.
