We had a pretty hopping community on the Redwall wiki for a long time. That was fun.

I literally never considered the idea of Redwall fanfiction existing before, for some reason

That's all I wrote in HS lmao. There's lots of holes to fill in. I never did work with the concept of the places Mariel and Dandin go at the end of the Bellmaker, or Castle Bowlaynee.

Yeah. Yep. Yepperino.

Same, OP! I love discussing books and I'm lucky that my best friend is also an avid reader so we can nerd out together, but she's not a fic writer and sometimes I really want to read fics based on my favorite books. Exactly zero exist for my favorite ones.

I want more cute gen fic of Harry Dresden and Maggie :(

like, I feel you but at the same time, consider what circumstances usually lead to robust fanwork activity...

either the source material is rife with so many plot holes, missing scenes, etc, that fandom feels the need to write fix-it fic and between-the-scenes fic to fill out what the source failed to address

or

the source material has such encouraging content that people can't help but write fic because they just want more - more of the characters, more of the setting, what have you.

So, there's a very real chance that either the books you read are so closed in that people feel satisfied, like they don't really need or want more of the characters or the setting, or it's so well-done that there's no holes to plug. Either way. I find that a lot of the books I read, that's exactly how I feel at the end. The book is done. I'm good. I don't need more of it. I'm happy with what I've got.

Or not enough people like reading.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-19 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Or they're older books that were popular well before the internet and have since then dropped out of the public view, so even if there was once an actual fandom, it was gone before it could have become an online community. Which tends to be the case with the books that I really get into and want fandom for, although very occasionally I will unexpectedly find something.

all very good reasons a book doesn't have fanworks, yes.

I feel like there's a chance older or obscure books may attract RPers but not people interested in fic or art. It's weird.

I feel ya, OP. I have several books that i love *so much*, and there's just nothing, and it's sad.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-19 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Same! There are so many books I'd love fic for, but they're just not big/popular enough. I know everyone always says "write it yourself!" but I kind of feel like that would be pointless when no one would read it.

I see a fair amount of things that have fandoms and arguably qualify as novels. They just tend to be distributed through the Internet rather than physical publishers. Worm’s a good example of the phenomenon.

There are a lot of mystery series I'd love to see fic for. Usually I find no fic or a few fics, unless there was a TV adaptation.

One day I will write my Five Find-Outers and Dog fanfic...

There's usually no inciting event, like a film release, for books, so a fandom rarely reaches critical mass. Like Tolkien fandom before the films came out (and that was one of the bigger ones.) When you think about how many books there are, and how long some of them have been around, that critical mass is just never going to be achieved.

I still write fanfic for the books I love, though. Very few people read the fics, except sometimes at Yuletide, but I re-read 'em. It saves me having to imagine the scenario anew every time I want to run through it.
