My theory is that there are a significant number of people who don't feel truly anon when IP logging is on all the time. It didn't use to be that way and comment numbers dropped off dramatically when it became the default.

Well tbh IP logging started becoming such a thing because of a bunch of serious nastiness from anons and anon people using it to bully people.

Honestly its just a case of "we can't have nice things"

Yeah, I get why it happened. But it didn't stop all the trolling and bullying and it's a shame it seemed to drive away legitimate traffic. FS is much, much quieter these days.

I don't think that's the only reason.

At the end of the day, if a community doesn't attract new members, the reality is that it's going to die by attrition. So anything that drives users away is going to make it much quieter - as is the normal passage of time as people change their lives or lose interest. Anon logging is one of those things, but it's not the only thing and probably would have happened anyway, although maybe not on the same time line.

That's all I'm going to say about it because this depresses me too much.

Well, I never claimed it was the only reason. I agree that traffic has fallen because the community isn't attracting new users. I chalk that up mostly to fandom moving away from platforms like LJ and Dreamwidth and toward Tumblr. But IP logging definitely did not help.

This.

Seriously doubt that. If comments have dropped, it's just because this place isn't as popular as it used to be and doesn't get any new blood. It's just us same people that have been here for years and years.

IP logging is only an issue if you're going to cross the line from ribbing and being a bitch online to being gratuitously offensive or spamming, so case can block you.

/shrug I totally understand the doubt, but I've been here for years and remember when IP logging wasn't automatic for every post. You could see comments take a biiig hit on days when it was on, and not all of that were trolls.
