I'm with you, I thought he'd come out not long after the Wonderfalls/Pushing Daisies era. Maybe that was just an open not-so-secret? I definitely remember Lee Pace/Ian McKellan stuff going around when they were doing The Hobbit. Either way, if he just officially came out, that feels an awful lot like a "water is wet" situation.

Rumor has it that it's publicity for an upcoming Broadway play where he's playing a gay closeted man. I don't know about that. Does PR really work that well for plays vs. movies?

Not really. And it's stupid to think he'd do that, considering Angels in America is a pretty known quantity. If he was going to come out for PR reasons, you'd think he would have done it for any number of projects that could have actually used the push, like Halt and Catch Fire, in which his character is also queer.

God no. He was outed as bi by Brian Moylan, who was doing a piece about his role in Angels in America. Moylan also outed Anderson Cooper (back when he wasn't publicly out because he was regularly reporting from countries where that fact was a death sentence), has attempted to out other people, and is a big stinking turd.

Also, I just remembered that there were a bunch of tinhatters convinced that he had a secret relationship with another actor, but I can't remember who it was. Was it Richard Armitage?

I am not surprised-- I actually sort of figured that he was but was hesitant to share details of his personal life with others because from interviews and such he strikes me as the type that likes to keep his two lives separate. I only hope that it was the right decision for him as a person.
