Yeah cause Jessica is all about non-self-destructive ways of dealing. Would you like her to get therapy and weave flower crowns and sing kumbaya?

Don't be silly. Also, try using your imagination. Imagine someone (maybe Malcolm, maybe Trish?) trying to introduce Jessica to non self-destructive ways of dealing. The therapy fails. The yoga fails. Running fails. Then one day a friend of Malcolm's gives him a gag gift - a massive 2000 piece puzzle that forms a picture of several hundred dildos in a pile.

Jessica mocks the idea at first. Puzzles are laaaaaame. But she's sitting at home, drinking and she spots a piece that fits. She puts it in, then walks away to do some other shit. A day or two later, she sees another one, sticks it in. Before you know it, she's doing puzzles Jessica Jones style, drinking, swearing and occasionally using the bottom of her whiskey bottle to pound in a piece that definitely does NOT fit (Malcolm will tell her later) but what the hell, this stupid dildo puzzle is the enemy now and it's going DOWN, motherfucker! It's still stupid, it's still lame... but it beats fucking dumbass dudebros in a bathroom.

It's fiction. You can do anything you want, so long as you make the writing work.

Man ALL OF THIS.
So tired of cliches and tropes that are just used ad nauseum. It's lazy fucking writing and I pretty much hate it.

Right? I'm not even hating on cliches, there are many commonly used cliches and tropes that I like. But I'm puzzled at the attitude of "Oh nooooo you can't deviate from the cliche or it'll be a whole different show!!!"

Like... no? Weird, crazy shit happens in TV shows all the time, and if the writing supports it, it works. You can subvert cliches, play with them, defy expectations. You're not locked into one limited viewpoint of a character that has to go unchanged, forever.

Like... I guess to me, there's a difference between a cliche, and a foundational component of a genre. And I think "locked into self-destructive patterns" is a major component of the genre that Jessica Jones is in.

Now, that definitely doesn't mean that she can't change as a character. Obviously. But engaging in those patterns is a central, fundamental aspect of her character, and starting to grow out of them is a major goal for her character and the show as a whole. That's the fundamental drama of that type of character in that type of show - can the character stop doing self-destructive shit and mature, or is the character doomed to repeat their self-destructive patterns?

It's not that it can't change. It's just that it can't change, like, accidentally. If it's going to change, it's going to be the result of a major event happening for the character and a resolution of a major plot point. To have Jessica Jones just not be self-destructive any more would be an unsatisfying resolution of the core conceit of the show.

That would've been great!

That would make a cute fic.

Not such a good episode of JJ, though.
