I've developed a bad habit

(Anonymous) 2018-04-28 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no idea why, but I've developed a really bad habit of doing nothing on weekends until the late afternoon. I know it sounds like bliss, but honestly, it isn't. It's 3 here, the day's half over and I've just showered.

I don't even sleep in. I was up at eight. But it's like I can't get myself moving. Or I get into things - reading, admittedly usually internet stuff - and I can't snap out of it until I realize half the day's been wasted.

Tips?

To do lists?

But if you're not leaving things undone (just getting a late start) and you're not regretful come monday that "I didn't do 30x things this weekend that I wanted to because I lazed around until 3pm" I wouldn't fret.

I am a later-active person. I get this burst of energy after 7pm to DO ALL THE THINGS, it's just how I am, so on my days off I will often chill or watch TV/read until late afternoon.

AYRT: It's a bit of both. But I wonder if it's also that when I realize it's the afternoon I feel a bit defeated. I really like your point that it's okay to be later-active.

Set alarms? If I'm having a bad day I'll set my phone to ring every hour/two hours to remind me to drink/stretch my legs/go do something else.

I don't know. The only real answer is to find a way to consistently get out of bed. I think a lot of it is just getting into the habit of doing it consistently. Maybe set hard limits for yourself (IE, getting out of bed by 9:00, no matter what) with rewards and/or punishments (IE, I will allow myself to get a donut if I get out of bed by 9:00 AM), or find things you like to do early in the morning. Maybe try setting looser limits at first - don't force yourself to jump out of bed at 8:00 and go for a run, but set more achievable goals like saying you're going to get out of bed by 10:00 and accept that's OK because it's better than getting out of bed at 3. IDK.

but...is it necessarily a bad thing?

I mean, if your weekend is for relaxing and maybe catching up on things (reading, housework/yardworks, etc) what does it matter if you start at 3 or at 7pm? As long as you're doing what you want to do, and get what you need to do done before you go to bed Sunday night, does the schedule actually matter?

my partner and I started, last year, to schedule ourselves to do one thing outside the house every weekend. it can be as simple as going to the farmer's market or making our Joann's run, or it could be an actual event in the city, either way. it did get us off our asses. but at the same time, it sometimes causes schedule interruptus, where shit that needs to get done around the house doesn't get done because we're "out." I'd rather get 2 hours of sewing in and spend the rest of my Saturday on my ass than get up at ass o'clock to do a Thing and then come home exhausted and unable to do any of my chores.

This. I used to stress out on my days off if I didn't go out and do anything "productive," but then I realized that as long as I managed to get everything I needed to do done, it didn't really matter how I spent the rest of the time. Today I didn't get up until 1, but I went out and got groceries and stopped by a local wine tasting, and now I'm at home in my PJs doing laundry. I didn't really do all that much, but I'm doing what needs to be done, so I don't feel guilty about it.

Maybe go to a yoga class that starts early? Even if you don't necessarily love it, it would be a way to force yourself out of the house with a hard time deadline.
