Based on #5

What pairings do you wish were more popular in fandom? Any particular reasons why?

Re: Based on #5

(Anonymous) 2018-05-06 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Non-canon femslash pairings

Re: Based on #5

(Anonymous) 2018-05-06 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
het pairings, especially problematic ones where the problematic elements are eroticized rather than being sanitized

It's not exactly a hard time finding those, is it?

Have you tried?

da

It really depends on the fandom. Especially the "problematic elements are eroticized rather than being sanitized" part, though that's becoming more and more of a problem across the board.

THIS. Although not necessarily eroticized, but explored rather than glossed over or ignored. *cough*underage*cough*

Is there actually underage het out there? I usually just write it in DM with friends to avoid the purity police.

What do you mean by "problematic elements"

Like, the usual older man dominating a younger woman in a dub-con-y way?

Re: Based on #5

(Anonymous) 2018-05-06 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, maledom, age disparity, incest, noncon, etc.

What fandoms have you checked out so far? I hate Reylo but there must be some fic that doesn’t sugarcoat them. I know almost nothing about Game of Thrones but it seems like most of the ships would be fucked up. There’s at least some Rumbelle and Phantom of the Opera fic out there that goes into their fucked up elements.

Pairings with background or one-off characters. Pairings with older characters or characters that are atypical in terms of appearances (or downright ugly). Some of the best characters are missed because of this. (Although fandom's pretty good about having one fic for every character if the fandom's super massive.)

I'd love to see more Reid/JJ fics in the "Criminal Minds" fandom. Mainly 'cause they're a favorite pairing of mine, and at one time they seemed to have a decent enough following, from what I've seen when going back through the fic archives. But they've kinda fallen by the wayside in recent years in favor of other pairings, which is odd, because there's been lots of moments and interactions between them in recent seasons that would be ripe for good fic ideas.

I like many of the other pairings, canon and non-canon, that fans will put Reid and JJ in, too, don't get me wrong-I multi-ship the hell out of the characters in this fandom in general :D. I just think it would be nice to see that particular pairing get a bit of a resurgence again, is all.

And this is a brand new fandom, so it's not like they're completely lost in the shuffle or anything like that, but in "The Good Doctor" fandom, I'm always up for more Shaun/Claire where possible. I think that fandom kinda started off liking the idea of those two, but other pairings have been coming along since then and are starting to take the lead. Again, I'm cool with those other pairings, just always nice when I can read stuff with a particular favorite pairing of mine.

Thor/Steve always. After watching IW, Steve/T'Challa.

McCree/Genji. They just make way more sense to me than McCree/Hanzo. Also, I hate Hanzo.

Oddball one, but if anyone remembers the hilariously bad but surprisingly fun League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie that came out in the early oughties, the first thing I wanted after seeing the movie was Nemo/Jekyll or Nemo/Jekyll/Hyde, on account of the entire final battle plus a few other moments between them. For some reason this seemed to be mostly not-a-thing in what little there was of an LXG fandom. Most of what I remember seeing was Skinner/Sawyer, Mina/Dorian, and generally Mina/anyone.

I mean, I get that Skinner and Sawyer were also surprisingly affecting in the final battle, and that Mina is the only female character in the movie and therefore unsurprisingly is shipped with anyone with a pulse in her vicinity, but still. I was annoyed.

I remember that movie! Not much of it, just that was so bad it killed Sean Connery's career. Friend of mine showed it to me because she liked one of the actors.

But I feel for you, one off movies rarely get big fandoms and if they do the fics are often canon adjacent

I remember that movie, too! I had no ships, though.

All I really remember now is how the Nautilus is apparently whatever size the plot needs it to be at any given moment, and the twist with Moriarty.

Tbh I could go for more het ships where the woman is older and tops tf out of the guy. (Specifically, I could go for more Widowmaker/McCree)

Tomoyo/Sakura, Tomoyo/Syoaran, Syoaran/Meilin. The first one because it's adorable and already one-sided in canon and I love them both. The second becaues I just enjoy their friendship and wish it was explored more in general, and becaues there were a lot of time where I felt that Syoran had more on-level communication with Tomoyo than he ever had with Sakura.

The last one just because I love their dynamic and I am a sucker for childhood marriage promises and het pairings where the boy is more sensible than the girl.

Thor/Steve because there needs to be more fics. Also Thor/Steve/Bucky.

In Star Wars, Kylo/Hux has a small, dedicated fandom, but now the fandom is busy moaning one way or another about TLJ and Kylo/Rey. Just want to enjoy my ship in peace.

Just rarepairs in general. Sometimes I don't even personally ship something, but I'll write fic for it because I'm sure someone out there does.

For example, I've been working on a fic titled "Every Possible The Good Place Ship," and it's going to have 54 chapters, one for each possible pairing for main and recurring cast members!

"Problematic" pairings in general. I don't know if it's just my specific fandoms or if it's a widespread thing or what, but I'm so tired of "this pairing is problematic and if you ship it you're a problematic person". Like, I understand that argument for pairings that glorify abuse, but for ones that involve only consenting adults, they're just a little...unconventional? Come on.

Also, ships of minor/background characters. There's a particular fandom where I shipped two incredibly minor characters who never even had a scene together mainly because of the actors. They were in something else together where they had an insane amount of chemistry but never could've gotten together because of a power imbalance, so I expected there to be at least a couple fics putting them together in this new fandom, but...nope. Not a single one.

And rare pairs. I feel like it used to be that you could find fic for every possible pairing in a fandom if it was big enough, because no matter how cracktastic it was, there was always someone that shipped it. Now it seems like most fandoms seem to stick to a small handful of either canon or just incredibly predictable pairings and it's pretty boring.

Crossover pairings of any sort. There is something about them that I really enjoy, even when I'm not that familiar with one of the fandoms.
