Better in another medium

(Anonymous) 2018-05-07 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
What do you think are some things that would be better in/better suited for a different medium? Like a live action movie that would work better as an animated movie, a comic that would be better as a novel etc.

As much as I like the movie, I think a video game could have been a better adaption of the comic version.

... and by this I meant Snowpiercer. How the hell did that get lost in there?

Good example.

If it was a game I think I'd get super frustrated and bored if I couldn't advance quickly enough for my liking because the physical space of the train is so limited and there's nowhere to explore.

Cloud Atlas: Re: Better in another medium

I think Cloud Atlas would have been better as an animated feature. On top of the political questions regarding the race-bending, the makeup effects were horrible at it, and I think the weird multiple-life continuity of characters was really hard to figure out across the different stories.

World War Z should have been a TV show.

Animorphs would work so well as an animated series. I'm still holding out hope for one someday. ;A;

I'm not sure if anyone else has ever even played this game, but...

Rule of Rose would have deeply benefitted from being a visual novel-- or, properly done, a short tv series. Even though the atmosphere was amazing, and some parts of the gameplay were kind of fun, the backtracking and godawful battle system nearly ruined the whole thing-- and even the fun parts of it kind of broke up the pacing. Which is a desperate shame, because the story is beautifully disturbing.

I played half of it. I totally agree with your opinion.

I would have preferred to have seen at least the first Newt Scamander movie as a book. JK Rowling is good at narrative and character building, which were missing almost entirely. I think everything would have made more sense in novel form.

Agreed, or a comic.

I thought the characterization and narrative were solid for a 2-hour film, but I would have loved a whole book.

Re: Better in another medium

(Anonymous) 2018-05-08 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Me too. I definitely wouldn't love the HP movie characters as much if I hadn't read the books first, and I still like the movies a lot.

I didn't dislike Fantastic Beasts, but I really miss having characters I'm invested in and feel like I know. I'm not even sure that I like Tina. I suspect if I'd read about how Newt sees her (and how J.K. Rowling sees her) I probably could, but I didn't connect with her as a character. I also have questions about bigger plot points and I'm impatient and I want to read ahead.

AYRT: Exactly. I felt that we were supposed to like Tina, and text would have helped with that. Maybe the next movie will deliver; I hope so.

Not quite another medium, but Shakespeare adaptations where Shakespearen English is still used don't work for me. I wish they'd just remake them with modern dialogue.

SA - Let me clarify before I get dogpiled by Shakespeare buffs

(Anonymous) 2018-05-07 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I meant to say I wish contemporary adaptations would use contemporary English.

There are at least some cartoon characters based off of Lovecraftian creatures. Black Hat from Villainous is basically Nyarlathotep and so is Aku here (though he has a bit of Azathoth and Japanese Oni mixed in.)

I should have been a bit more specific. I don't like anime.

Re: Better in another medium

BlazBlue should have straight up been an a anime series and not a video game with how deep the lore goes. Yes, it's ridiculous, but the lore interests me far more than the beating up does.

That King Arthur movie with Charlie Hunam would have been a kickass limited series, like 10 episodes on Netflix, where it could delve into its myths and jaunty characters instead of quick-edit-montaging through all the cool monster fighting.
