Favorite Twin Film?

(Anonymous) 2018-05-11 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
"Twin films are films with the same, or very similar, plot produced or released at the same time by two different film studios"

Here is a list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twin_films

For those who have seen both, which did you prefer?

Babe is 100x better than Gordy.

A Bug's Life is better than Antz.

I slightly prefer The Emperor's New Groove to The Road to El Dorado.

The Prestige is a masterpiece and I can only barely remember The Illusionist.

Zootopia is better than Sing.

I definitely liked Antz better than A Bug's Life, which is considered blasphemy because I live in Pixar country.

I had some friends who preferred The Illusionist because they judged everything based on how historically accurate they thought the costumes were and not by the really important stuff, like "Does David Bowie play Nikola Tessla in this movie?"

I enjoyed The Illusionist and *hated* The Prestige, despite my mad love for the Goblin King going incognito as Tesla. I mean, I can kinda make it work that HE is the supernatural vector in the film, because otherwise that is a genre shift and bad faith plot twist!! the whole thing is supposed to be about presdigiditation and ****stage trickery****, putting in actual magic/sufficiently advanced technology is a massive script cheat and violation of the spectator's good faith as far as I am concerned. And eurgh, double dose of dour Christian Bale.
And I like Rufus Sewell, and 'The Illusionist' pulls a charming whole-plot misdirection/twist/con which is nice meta.

Can Zootopia and Sing really be considered twin films? I watched and liked both, but they were quite different in tone and topic.

I think the only ones I saw both of on that list were "The Road to El Dorado" and "The Emperor's New Groove," and WOW is that a tough call. If you forced me to choose which I prefer, I think I'd say "El Dorado," but those are both fucking phenomenal.

I've apparently seen a lot.

I liked Deep Impact over Armageddon, but neither were masterpieces.

Big was definitely better than Like Father, Like Son, which was just bad.

I liked DeepStar Six better than Leviathan, but in the way where I sometimes like bad horror.

Dangerous Liaisons and Valmont were both pretty good, but you could tell Dangerous Liaisons was made with a lot more money.

Rookie of the Year and Little Big League were okay, but one had much more of a comedic bent.

Three of Hearts and Threesome were both pretty bad and they had some weird messages about homosexuality.

I liked both Dante's Peak and Volcano.

The Fast and the Furious was so much better than Gone in 60 Seconds it isn't even funny.

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar are much further apart than they'd seem on the surface of it.

The Truman Show was much, much better than EdTV.

there were several movies along the lines of Big and Like Father Like Son although I can't remember the names of the rest of them (other than Freaky Friday, and like I said earlier, I liked the book of that a lot better than the movies.)
nightscale: Starbolt (Farscape: Zhaan)

I'm only going with the ones where I've seen both on that list.

Armageddon over Deep Impact, although I do like the latter as well.

Megamind over Despicable Me.

Gremlins over Ghoulies.

Dante's Peak over Volcano, though again I like both.

A Bug's Life over Antz.

I think the Emperor's New Groove over The Road to El Dorado, but that's a tough one, they're both fantastic.

Gone in 60 Seconds over the Fast and the Furious.

Finding Nemo over Shark Tale.

AvP over Freddy vs Jason.

Sky High over Zoom.

Skyline and Battle: LA were equally ridiculous to me so I can't pick.

Pacific Rim over Battleship big-time, I had trouble paying attention during Battleship honestly.

BvS and CA:CW were both okay to me. I think I found BvS more boring overall.

I like An American Tail and The Great Mouse Detective equally.

Mortal Kombat was a lot better than Street Fighter. (Those are actually triplet films with Double Dragon, which was worse than Street Fighter.)

A Bug's Life was better than Antz.

It's been a while, but I remember thinking that Stigmata was better than End of Days.

Finding Nemo was way better than Shark Tale.

I haven't seen them in a million years, but I feel like An American Tail and The Great Mouse Detective are pretty different movies. I mean, yes, they are both animated movies about mice, but the mice do pretty different things.
