From what I've seen that is pretty much true. The best thing about Marvel is the movies which are consistently entertaining and insanely successful. You know it's just because the movies because Captain America, Iron Man, Black Panther, and Thor weren't even popular comicbook characters until the movies. Only Spider-man and X-men were popular in comicbooks until the Marvel shared universe.

As for DC you are right since Batman and co. comics seem to always be the most popular. Batman also gets the best video games with the Arkham series, then there's Gotham, and lots of animated movies. Only Superman comes close in popularity.

Really makes you realize how badly they fucked up the the DC shared universe in movies when you have two juggernaut characters like Batman and Superman and you manage to fuck it up. Maybe because the best thing about Batman is his rogues gallery and batfamily which the general audience will never get to actually see.

I think the previous anon meant that Spiderman and the X-Men sell a lot more books than the others, which weren't always doing that well.

I haven't looked up sales figures, but I would definitely consider The Avengers to have been one of the central pillars of Marvel as a comic company?

According to this, only four Marvel titles have sold over 100 million copies:
Spider-Man, X-Men, Captain America, and Avengers.

Over the long term yes, but they weren't big in the "comics boom" of the early 90s which the poster is probably thinking of, and they definitely didn't have the name recognition of Spider-Man or the X-Men.

Superman is the dullest character ever. No inner conflict, just always doing an objectively "right" thing. I think that's why all his movies suck.
