From what I've seen that is pretty much true. The best thing about Marvel is the movies which are consistently entertaining and insanely successful. You know it's just because the movies because Captain America, Iron Man, Black Panther, and Thor weren't even popular comicbook characters until the movies. Only Spider-man and X-men were popular in comicbooks until the Marvel shared universe.

As for DC you are right since Batman and co. comics seem to always be the most popular. Batman also gets the best video games with the Arkham series, then there's Gotham, and lots of animated movies. Only Superman comes close in popularity.

Really makes you realize how badly they fucked up the the DC shared universe in movies when you have two juggernaut characters like Batman and Superman and you manage to fuck it up. Maybe because the best thing about Batman is his rogues gallery and batfamily which the general audience will never get to actually see.

This is an interesting take

I think the previous anon meant that Spiderman and the X-Men sell a lot more books than the others, which weren't always doing that well.

I haven't looked up sales figures, but I would definitely consider The Avengers to have been one of the central pillars of Marvel as a comic company?

IDK tho

According to this, only four Marvel titles have sold over 100 million copies:
Spider-Man, X-Men, Captain America, and Avengers.

Over the long term yes, but they weren't big in the "comics boom" of the early 90s which the poster is probably thinking of, and they definitely didn't have the name recognition of Spider-Man or the X-Men.

Superman is the dullest character ever. No inner conflict, just always doing an objectively "right" thing. I think that's why all his movies suck.

I'm a fan of certain specific Marvel and DC characters. I would never call myself a Marvel fan or a DC fan because I'm not interested in most of their lineup. It is a little ironic that I probably know more about the lineups than most people who call themselves Marvel and DC fans though.

May be an age thing. If you're old enough to remember when comics as a medium were popular, you've probably heard of more than the teenage MCU fan through sheer osmosis.

Same here. There are a few characters/teams from either publisher that I love, but I couldn't care about the rest. I'm certainly not loyal to any of them (tho, I still haven't forgiven DC for fucking up the Batfamily dynamic in their reboot and whatever came after).
I just think the fights are pretty silly.

I'd say it possibly varies depending on the age of the person saying it. For example, I'd broadly call myself a DC fan, but it wasn't the comics that I got into, it was the cartoons. Because I grew up in the 90s/00s and the DCAU was my absolute jam as a kid. It was only as I got older that I started reading the comics too, focusing mainly on Justice League and, yes, Batman titles.

I'd also consider myself an X-men fan to a more limited extent, again because the 90s X-men cartoon was the boss, but I found the X-men comics a lot harder and more confusing to get into, so I never went as far into Marvel comics. My cousin was a massive Spiderman fan so I read a bit of his collection, but to be honest it never really stuck.

Fandomwise, DC was one of my first proper fandoms, and I was in the MCU fandom in the earlier phases (up to Avengers 1). I just burn out a lot quicker on superheroes in movies than I do in other media.

So, going back to my first point, age may be a factor here.

That's kind of an interesting go to.

I say that because I feel like comic book superhero stuff is part of our pop culture. I think I've read one or two superhero comics in my life (Superman) and a Batman graphic novel, for some reason. And, yet, I know about the comics Civil War and A Killing Joke and a few other things that made a big enough noise in comics for me to hear about.

But I have watched:
The 60s Batman show in syndication (I even watched the movie)
A couple of episodes of the black and white Superman show
The Christopher Reeve Superman movies (and even the Supergirl one)
The Incredible Hulk show
A couple of episodes of the Linda Carter Wonder Woman show
The cartoon Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends (very fond of that one)
Some of the Justice League Unlimited cartoon
Early seasons of Smallville
An episode or two of the 90s Flash
The 90s Batman movies
Not all of the X-Men movies, but a fair amount
At least three Spider-Man movies
At least a few episodes each of Arrow and Supergirl, and more of The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow
An episode or two of Gotham
Nine or ten of the MCU movies to date

And if you asked DC or Marvel, I don't know what I would say.

This whole thing is honestly really interesting for me - the way that we just assume that comic books are the central part of the superhero genre, and everything else is just an unofficial adaptation that doesn't "count" as the "real thing". Even though they're more popular and have been around for decades.

Personally, I've noticed it in myself with science fiction and fantasy - I have this unconscious assumption that written science fiction and fantasy is the "real" science fiction and fantasy, and that sf&f movies, TV shows, video games, etc are all a bunch of secondary things that don't really "count". Even though, objectively, all of those things are way more popular and influential than actual written SF&F.

ayrt

Yeah, it's so interesting.

And, I'm with you on the science fiction, even though I'd be hard pressed to explain exactly why certain thing don't count or don't count as much.

I'm a Marvel fan, but I have no interest in the movies. It sucks when that's all anyone wants to talk about.

Which characters and teams? I mostly know Alpha Flight and X-men.

X-Men mostly.

Who are your faves? I really like Northstar, Chamber, Jubilee, Nightcrawler, Rogue, Storm, Iceman...I'm kinda really into 80's comics.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-26 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Kitty is my favorite. I also like Storm, Jean,Nightcrawler, etc. I like all the characters basically.

I love the old comics. I read the new ones as well.

That's fair as it would probably most accurately describe me. Though I grew up in the 90s so my first real exposure was the animated shows at that time. Have loads of Batman books, am mostly Marvel in the films at the moment but am trying to read some Thor.

I'd say like another comment here I'm more about individual characters these days. There's just so much though I don't really mind as long as everyone is having fun.
