I think it's one of those things where like... yes, it is reasonably common in the UK (and possibly in the rest of the commonwealth), which is fine, obviously. But the fact that it's a Britishism, and perceived as high-register and "sophisticated", means that it's also used by some Americans who want to write in a "sophisticated" way, and those people are probably pretty awkward.
