I don't blame you, OP. As a fic writer I get where these guys are coming from. I even felt the same way when I was a teenager. Now I realize that my insecurities are my own problem, not my audience's. That blatant lack of gratitude for having an appreciative audience, regardless of how they express themselves, doesn't reflect well on anyone. It's silly for creatives to try to police how people respond to their work. It's literally no better than people who write bad fics and put "NO FLAMES!!!" at the end. Like, no. It's the Internet. People are gonna say what they're gonna say. If they're actually harassing you, report them. Otherwise, suck it up and deal with it. A comment that says "More" and nothing else isn't going to kill you.

By this logic, flamers and sporkers need to "suck it up and deal with it" and just bite their tongues when they read a fic they don't like.

Uh, no. Explain how you came to that conclusion, because I'm not seeing the equivalence.

This is what I said: if you put it on a part of the Internet, such as a fanfic site, with a comments section, people are going to say what they're going to say regardless of whether or not you like it. That's a fact. If you're gonna be picky about what they say, expect to be met with scorn.

Of course never tolerate harassment or bullying, but otherwise? Yeah, suck it up and deal with it. The Internet is worldwide. What's considered "rude" depends on the individual and where they come from.

The "you put it on the Internet sweaty" argument goes both ways. Yet somehow you believe it's okay to complain about writers and about writers complaining, but not for writers to complain about... anything.

Of course writers can complain about whatever the hell they want. When did I say they couldn't? And please don't tell me what I "implied." Tell me where I actually said that.

I can still disagree with their approach and have every right to. It comes across as bratty and ungrateful to me. And so what? Clearly other people don't agree, and that's fine, but I stand by what I said. Plus, it's a straight up fact that you have little/no control over feedback you receive if you put something up in a public place. I'm not trying to be an asshole. It really is in a writer's best interest to accept the FACT that not all people are going to respond to their work the way they might imagine.

DA

And it's useful for commenters to understand the fact that shouting "MORE!!" and nothing else in the comments is unlikely to be received with enthusiasm. It's one of those times when taking a minute to think about tone pays dividends.

I've responded to "More" with equally bland responses, like "thanks" or "soon." Sometimes they'll elaborate when I respond that way. Either way I still appreciate it. It's not as exciting or validating as long reviews, but it's not a bad thing. I still think it's in poor taste to criticize feedback, unless it's abusive, but that's way different.
