Re: What is something mostly inconsequential \that you with people knew?
Uh, I'll go with the fact that cats aren't dogs. Don't be surprised if they don't want to play fetch or cuddle all the time. And they need play time, and a different type of play from dogs.
So many people get surprised when cats don't act like dogs, and cats get returned to shelters or abandoned because of it.

I honestly wonder why those kinds of people don't just get a small lap-dog since that's basically what they're after.

My dad has always been a dog person. We've had cats, but they were always super cuddly cats. My current cat is not. She's very cat, and she's clearly been abused in the past. My dad tries to play rough with her and tries to touch her all the time and then wonders why he's the only one whose legs she nips. Because she thinks you're a cat, dad. I've told you several times not to touch her like that. You're the problem.

While it's a bit sad because she is the cutest little thing it's how she is so we respect her boundaries and as a result she likes to sleep on my bed with me sometimes or near one of us on the sofa(but never on us).
However some of our other family is used to their more cuddly cats, try to man-handle her a bit even when we tell them she doesn't like it, and they wonder why she mostly gives them a wide berth when they visit.
Curiously my uncle, who does follow her boundaries, she'll sleep on the bed with when he comes over, funny that. And he doesn't even have pets!
I think even cat-people are a bit shit at reading cat body langue and queues sometimes tbh.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-30 02:11 am (UTC)(link)People can also be way too loud and aggressive around cats in a way that might be playful to a dog, but freaks a cat out.
