What others have said. And also, if it takes a book for you to think there is beauty in all cultures, you've already got the wrong opinion. All cultures are beautiful, period. All cultures have good points and bad points. It doesn't matter what you personally like or dislike. And this whole secret is coming off as racist to me.

"And this whole secret is coming off as racist to me."

That's the point - it's meant to be ironic.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-30 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Expand on that.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-30 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Because they admit to starting to like Indian culture based on a book by a white person.

That's why it's a secret - because they know how ridiculous it is.

No?

They might very well know that they're being somewhat ridiculous, but that doesn't mean that they're not sincere. Knowing that something is ridiculous isn't necessarily the same as irony.

And even if they know that "I started to like India at least a little" is a completely fucking ridiculous thing to say, they still said it.

Well, it didn't come across as ironic. It just came across as racist.

I always wondered who the people who needed the "/s" at the end of posts were.

Thanks fam.

? Sorry, not sure what you mean.

They're accusing you of not understanding sarcasm.

It's not very nice.

Okay. Not seeing any sarcasm, and the other person responded as if that comment was serious. So not sure why I was singled out.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-31 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they're just being a jerk. Don't worry about it.

+1

AGREED

(Anonymous) 2018-05-31 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I hate this attitude.

Their opinion is changing. Who gives a crap why it's changing? It is. They're moving toward a better position, where they can understand what you're trying to convey, and you're chastising them for it? WTF do you think that'll accomplish, besides making you feel good about yourself for half a second?

BTW, why even bother trying to tell them that all cultures are beautiful? After all, if they grow or change because you've told them that, well, they'll still have already had the wrong opinion, right?

Because the reason why can be racist in itself. In this case it is. Good that they are changing, yes. But that they are only changing because of a book and feel the need for another book to see another culture (that is really many cultures) as good says they have along way to go.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-31 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
That's how books about other cultures work. That's what books about other cultures are for. Good grief!

(Anonymous) 2018-05-31 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
It's just...weird that they can't find beauty in African cultures until someone proves it to them with a decent book. The whole thing is just weirdly phrased from "I started to like India at least a little" (were they actively hating India until then?) to "I'll [have the attitude] down pat" (like they won't actually believe every culture is beautiful but they'll be able to imitate someone who does?) Idk, I read the secret a few times and my reaction was just "What the fuck?" Like these are weird things to be learning after the age of six I guess.
