What subgenres do you want to see more of? Ex: Non-zombie apocalypse films.

Re: Based on 1

I'm only interested in post-apocalyptic stuff if it's really far after the apocalypse and society has already rebuilt to a considerable extent

The period immediately after the post-apocalypse is just depressingly grim and kinda boring

I would like more horror-comedy.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-01 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
But not dumb horror-comedy, though that does have it's place. But, like, Happy Death Day was pretty good, even with a couple of plotholes that frustrated me a bit.

High fantasy movies. Fantasy movies in general that aren't superhero.

Distant future scifi.

Happy future scifi (aka not depressing and dark but where things have gotten better).

Heroic action (where the main character is a genuine hero, not anti-hero, don't care what overarching genre really, I just want more heroes).

You know, if you're looking for genuine heroes, give Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas a try. Last I checked it was on Crunchyroll, and it's got genuine, old-fashioned heroic action.

Urban Fantasy that is not sexy vampires/werewolves. Or sexy anything.

not that I'm against sexy werewolves and vampires

but, like, that should be the cherry on the sundae, not the whole sundae

Look, Drunk Shadowhunters Watching me is different from Sober Critically Thinking me. You can't judge me based on Drunk!Me.

Alcohol didn't make you like pretty boys. It just released you from your shame!

I need both shows I can shame-marathon alone in the dark, and interesting new shows I can actually tell people I watch.

This is very true. But we must not let anyone know.

Have you Watched The Magicians? (First two seasons on Netflix).

Forget the silly "floating schoolgirl" picture they have on the series. It's several flavors of awesome (wonderfully complex characters, for one, and some nifty worldbuilding).

(Also some pretty dark stuff, and a few missteps. But still, really good.)

(Oops, misfire reply)

I was surprised by it. Give the first episode a try and see what you think.
(There is some sexy, but it's not as frequent as in some shows. There's relationship stuff, too, but it's handled much more deftly than certain other shows I could name.)

Fantasy that isn't either 1) blatantly ripping off Lord of the Rings or 2) a bad excuse to write medieval fiction without having to know anything about real history

like, idk, shouldn't something called "fantasy" actually involve using your imagination?

Plenty of that out there, including some nice silkpunk if you're into that.

Re: Based on 1

(Anonymous) 2018-06-02 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Could you recommend some?

Re: Based on 1

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2018-06-02 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Admittedly, a lot of silkpunk is SF (Liu, Lee). JY Yang's Tensorate is my best read from last year.

In African-influenced fantasy, Okorafor has a YA fantasy series with the Akata Witch series. Lord had Redemption in Indigo. Zoo City was an interesting urban fantasy from a few years back.

If you follow the World Fantasy Award shortlists or periodicals like Lightspeed there's plenty of non-historical fantasy getting published.

I first somehow heard Fallout 76 as Fallout 1776 and I want that now.

So maybe post apocalypse stories, but not modern. Post apocalypse historic fiction?

"What if the Cold War had turned hot? Where would everyone be?"
"How different would post-apoc survival be in 18th century London with only the tech of the times available?"
"If the world had ended in the 1200s how crazy would the Catholic Church have gone?"

Different anon here chiming in to say that post apocalypse historic fiction sounds great!

SF/F with a detective/noir feel.
