Well.

There was a lot of infidelity in the show and I don't really like infidelity (since it aired so long ago, I think teenage me probably wrote some of it off as adults being stupid). But Shelly's made sense to me. For Ed and Nadine, it kind of felt like Ed had become more Nadine's caretaker - he loved her and wanted her to be okay, but he wasn't really in love with her anymore. And I think staying married to her was a way to care for her and because he felt guilty. Also, Nadine could be scary. It wasn't right, but it was complicated.

OP: I think I'm alright with the idea that some relationships just fall apart or don't work out, so in a way I can be okay with seeing Ed and Norma's relationship bud as they start to experience being alive again. You did a very good write up on the subject, thank you!

100% Agreed. :P

ayrt

I do think, under most circumstances, people should just end things if they feel the need to cheat. But, sometimes, certain circumstances make things, not necessarily acceptable, but understandable.

You did a very good write up on the subject, thank you! You're welcome!

Hope you enjoy the rest of your rewatch. ☺

I... kind of... liked that plotline?

OP here: I know what you mean! I'm kinda guiltily starting to like it too (how much of that is because it's Everett McGill or how much I like Ed's character is up to debate). And yet I remember nothing about this plotline from my first time watching the show. What the hell!

Overlooking how much in bad taste romantic cheating would be IRL and instead be more favorable to the story, I think Ed and Norma's relationship ties both into the overall theme that the town of Twin Peaks is full of secrets, and how love can save you. Not gonna lie, there is also something appealing about seeing a-person-of-few-words Ed be in love. ;)

I think it was interesting to me because it really felt like it wasn't anyone's fault. It was 3 people being in a profoundly unhappy situation and trying to do the best they could not to hurt anyone.

And yes, I do agree about the person-of-few-words being in love part. I love that dynamic.

Yeah, a lot of the infidelity on the show bugged me, but not this one. Lynch has a thing about screaming harpy wives that good men are stuck with, but in this case all three actors did a lot with that plotline and made it a lot more complex and human.

I think that's why I'm enjoying this one a lot better tbh. The actors are making the characters a lot more earnest, sympathetic, and dare I say compelling?

But yeah, how the hell did I miss this storyline the first time around? Maybe I honestly did skip episodes, while at the same time keeping the show on the background. I just remember being really damn confused by all the characters and story threads to follow the first time watching the show, so maybe that's how Ed and Norma's relationship went under my radar.
