I don't get it at all. I've heard/read many people say it, but it is stupid every single time. Like, even the Hobbit isn't all light and fluffy. People die. LOTR certainly isn't either. So even if you know nothing of his writing outside of those, it is still a ridiculous thing to say.

I know, right? Even lighthearted Hobbit has, what, a third of the Unexpected Party dying in the battle? Let me guess, all fantasy authors have to live up to GRR Martin's body count before they can be considered serious enough.

Yup. And the Martin comparison is stupid anyway because Tolkien totally kills that many (and more) in the Silmarillion. Everyone, just about, dies.
