Re: What is the silliest thing you've heard someone say in fandom?
(Anonymous) 2018-06-22 02:03 am (UTC)(link)If you dumped a dog in the forest who has lived with people all its life, chances are it won't survive if someone else doesn't come along to take care of it. I think most house elves are, for a lack of a better term, bred for loyalty like humans domesticated animals. So while you might have the occasional oddball like Dobby, the majority of house elves wouldn't know what to do if you gave them freedom (like Winky or Kreacher).
Just my two cents.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-22 12:12 pm (UTC)(link)Well, living independently does require certain skills. Ideally, we teach them to kids as they reach adulthood.
Humans who have been kept in institutions long-term - prisons, mental health institutions, barracks-like foster homes - benefit from halfway houses, acclimisation programs, and community sponsors.
So... just throwing house elves a sock each would be irresponsible. Making sure they have places to go, people to help them get there, and a fair wage if they choose to stay, would be kinder. (Though, a tapering off system would itself be open to abuse so, eh.)
