* Owning a home means spending a lot of time in maintenance of the yard, etc. You'll need to have an emergency fund for if big ticket items break down, like the furnace/HVAC, the roof.
* Look at lots of listings. Realtor.com is fine. Acquaint yourself with your market and what's available in the area you want to buy in.
* Look at lots of listings. Pay attention to the age of stuff like the roof, furnace, water heater. Be wary of crooked doors and windows that suggest the foundations are settling.
* Offer contingent upon a home inspection. You want someone thorough who'll crawl through the attic, look at crawl spaces if applicable, etc.
