Think long and hard about it. If I were single, I'm not sure I would buy a house unless I found an amazing deal in the perfect neighborhood AND had a considerable amount of income. Some things you have to consider:

* how long do you plan to stay in one area

* do you have kids or plan to have kids, get married, etc.

* how reliable is your income and job

* how much liquid income do you have for the down payment, closing costs, and expenses. Don't just look at mortgage payments and think "Oh hey, that's less then what I pay in rent" because there are hidden costs on top of mortgage payments that factor into the decision.

* if you rent, you don't have to worry about stuff breaking down or wearing out - that's someone else's problem. When you own a house, it'll be YOUR problem, and you footing the bill.

* you'll have to spend a certain amount of your free time doing yard work, shoveling the driveway, stuff like that.
