What did Anne write and is it as boring as Wuthering Heights?

(Anonymous) 2018-06-26 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is the one that's talked about in the secret.

Is your Google broken?

(Anonymous) 2018-06-26 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I suspect the defect is on the user side.

It does plod a bit. I say that with love now though. It definitely has less of a gloomy romantic vibe than Wuthering Heights. I didn't get through it the first time because I didn't care much for the narration style (epistolary) or the dull lives of the characters. However, for its time it was a very progressive book.

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and Agnes Grey. I personally liked both and thought they were way better than Wuthering Heights.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-26 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
WH is the only one I've read. I don't think it's romantic, but I do think it's very entertaining! I love stories where all the characters are despicable.

Anyway, I don't think I've ever personally met anyone who thought it was soooo romantic, but I've met a ton of people who hate it. So I generally avoid discussions about it as well off anon.

I love WH and find it very compelling too. But it shouldn't be anyone’s template for romance, no.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-26 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it's fiction, so who cares if there are people who find it romantic? But I agree it's not a good example for real life romance.

I would normally be into stories like Wuthering Heights cause I love fiction where everyone is awful, and I do appreciate some of the themes in it, but in actuality it puts me to sleep every time I try to read it

(Anonymous) 2018-06-27 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
It starts slow, yeah.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-26 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it terrible that I didn't know there was a third Bronte? Then again, I loathed WH and can't remember if I've even read Jane Eyre. However, if her writing is better/more sensible than either of those, I'm willing to give it a try.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-26 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, not terrible. I didn't know there was another Bronte sister until college. Anne just isn't as well known as her sisters. For what it's worth, I hated Wuthering Heights, but I loved both of Anne's books.

I respect the hell out of a woman who wrote anything that unladylike and intentionally dark as a way of expressing the inner turmoil of being a woman or an outcast in those times even if the work has some very dated problems.

And I'm not saying these people don't exist, but I've literally never talked to a fan of Wuthering Heights or Jane Eyre who thought those were wholesomely romantic stories.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-26 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
OP didn't say anything about wholesomely romantic, though. There are plenty of readers who find both those books romantic.

People want what they want, I suppose.

Anne is my favorite Bronte sister and I love her two books. It makes me sad that she's not as well known as Charlotte and Emily. Their books get all kinda of pretty versions, but I've never been able to find pretty versions of Anne's books.

Rupert Graves pretty enough for you?

I did get the sense that we were supposed to be sympathetic to Mr. Rochester and find his darkness ~romantic, I definitely don't get that feeling from Heathcliff and Cathy. They're awful but hilarious and entertaining as fuck in a way I don't think many authors at the time would let their characters be (seriously how can you not crack up at the scene where Cathy's pretending to have fits and Nelly catches her faking). I love that Wuthering Heights shows how dramatic, destructive and delusional people can be even when they live in relative solitude and peace.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-27 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Well, excuse us sillyfor women for enjoying characters you dislike.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-27 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
You clearly haven't read Vilette, which knocks anything Anne or Emily ever wrote into a cocked hat.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-27 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but I've read Villette and, while I enjoyed it, I definitely prefer Wildfell Hall over it. It is way better than Wuthering Heights though.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-27 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
I liked Agnes Grey. But I gave up on Tenant of Wildfell Hall after Gilbert attacked Helen's brother out of jealousy. That's not what I'd call a stable love interest.
