Even in the old EU, Leia wasn't presented as Han's One True Love type of thing? Sure, Leia is 18 and has dedicated her life to the rebellion, so as far as she goes, Han's it. Han was older and had at least 2 girls before Leia. His first love was Bria of Corellia and then there was another smuggler he knew on Nar Shadda after he got kicked out from the Imperial Navy. Then he met Leia.

He wasn't supposed to be presented as much as a ladies' man as Lando (and Lando tends to have a string of them.) He was supposed to be charming and more worldly than her.

Leia also had the "princess" title going for her and there is a point in the Old EU that she wasn't marrying Han because she might have to make a political marriage for the benefit of the New Republic.

They're a great couple and I love them and their dynamic. The smuggler and the princess is more complicated than the original movies liked to pretend it was. (Then they tossed the old EU and yeah.)
