Hmm, I don't know if Qi'ra has a stronger bond, but she certainly played a major role in his life. I don't think that's a bad thing, though. On the contrary, I found it a refreshing change from the "one true love" trope that seems to run through so much media.

I see Han as having been in love with both Leia and Qi'ra, but in different ways. It doesn't mean that one has to be greater than the other, especially when they are occurring at different periods in his life. They're both important, and they're different, and they both came to different endings.

This is I think the best possible answer--

What someone needs at 21 isn't the same person that one needs at 35, it's really very true. Because we are different people and needs evolve as you do.

I don't think the TFA stuff weakens their bond. It makes their relationship a lot more complex. But I still got the sense that they mattered to each other immensely, that they loved each other deeply, and cared about each other, and all the other stuff like that.

And the Qi'ra stuff, I don't see the argument at all. Loving one person doesn't weaken your bond with someone else. Don't see where that's coming from.

Thanks for the warning. I wasn't keen on watching this and now I know to stick with the main movies only.

The way I see it, their love did survive, but their marriage was heavily tested. (Are we supposed to accept they were done-and-dusted-divorced as of TFA? I'm not sure.)

I mean they were definitely and literally Separated for a while

and I wouldn't be at all surprised if either of them had had company in the last ten (???) years, but I do think they still loved each other a lot and were probably technically married

OP, I suggest you read Bloodline by Claudia Gray for some post-separation Hanleia goodness. Their love absolutely survived losing their son to a hokey religion and later to Snoke.

Thanks for the rec!

Even in the old EU, Leia wasn't presented as Han's One True Love type of thing? Sure, Leia is 18 and has dedicated her life to the rebellion, so as far as she goes, Han's it. Han was older and had at least 2 girls before Leia. His first love was Bria of Corellia and then there was another smuggler he knew on Nar Shadda after he got kicked out from the Imperial Navy. Then he met Leia.

He wasn't supposed to be presented as much as a ladies' man as Lando (and Lando tends to have a string of them.) He was supposed to be charming and more worldly than her.

Leia also had the "princess" title going for her and there is a point in the Old EU that she wasn't marrying Han because she might have to make a political marriage for the benefit of the New Republic.

They're a great couple and I love them and their dynamic. The smuggler and the princess is more complicated than the original movies liked to pretend it was. (Then they tossed the old EU and yeah.)

I disagree. I think what we see in TFA is exactly how their relationship would have turned out. Bickering and driving each other crazy is ok when you're young and full of hormones, but it gets old fast and there needs to be something pretty amazing to replace it. I'm not saying they didn't love each other, but TFA is as close to reality as possible for that kind of relationship and I was surprised they went there with the separation.

Agreed.

I always got the feeling that the war took a big chunk of their focus and attention, making them ignore the flaws in their relationship in favor of appreciating what little time they got together.

Then the war was over, and even if there was a lot of work left to do, it wasn't as immediate and life-threatening, which left them space to realize that bickering is not the basis for a good long-term relationship and sometimes love isn't enough to overcome certain issues.
