See, I like things like WH40K too, because they're so hilariously over the top dark that they warp back around to entertaining again. You're still going to die horribly, but chances are pretty good that you're going to die horribly in spectacular fashion. I'm not so fond of a lot of more mundane dystopias, and even a lot of normal war or crime stories, because they tend to have more of a dull, grinding bleakness and despair. It's harder for me to deal with. By comparison, WH40K is just ... bonkers. Full of crackpot little anecdotes and amazing characters. It's basically the epitome of gallows humour. If death is inevitable, you might as well die cackling maniacally while wielding a chainsaw sword against robo liches and mad mushroom men and psychic demons from hell.

Though I admit, I'm more fond of the Necrons and the Tyranids than Chaos myself. Especially the Necrons. I'm intrigued by the idea of ancient, soulless, implacable machine revenants driven by a burning hatred for other life and a desire to return to former glories. The little detail about shattering and enslaving their own gods is fascinating too. I really do adore patience in an antagonist.

My problem with 40K is that it focuses so much on the Imperium/Space Marines, who *are* quite mundane and dull and grinding and uninteresting to me. And, also, who often read as weirdly sympathetic for a bunch of space fascists, especially amongst the fandom.

IA about Tyranids and especially Necrons. Necrons are just so cool aesthetically, I love 'em, they're total badasses and no one pretends they're not huge terrible evil weirdos.

True. I'm pretty good at ignoring the bits of canons that I don't like/amn't interested in, though, when there's enough else in the canon that I do. Though, to be fair, I'm not exactly in the WH40K fandom. I just admire the concept and the fluff from a distance, really.

Necrons are definitely the coolest concept in the game for me. Tyranids run a close second as an apocalyptic concept, and the Swarmlord is a fascinating idea. I'm also very fond of the Orks as an idea, though admittedly the execution gets a bit grating at times. I love Tzeentch and Nurgle among the Chaos gods, and the Eldar Laughing God as well. In general I'm all about the xenos, baby!

With exceptions: the Tau are boring to me, and the Dark Eldar are somewhat tired and familiar as well. Though the city of Comorragh as a concept is spectacular.

Tau are a little dull, yeah. And Dark Eldar too, but I like the regular variety a lot - they're also kinda tired and familiar but it's a familiar thing that I like a lot, so.

I have a soft spot for the Eldar as well. Helps that I love the Harlequin as a motif, and that one of the first bits of their fluff I read about was Maugan Ra. Cegorach and Ynnead are also very cool. The fallen race on their last legs fighting to preserve some tiny piece of themselves, not only in this life but the afterlife, is an old but good plotline.

The Eldar/Dark Eldar have always felt very Moorcock-y and Elric-ish, which is something that I appreciate a lot. There's just a lot of cool aesthetic stuff there. In addition to the insane, over the top 40k stuff. It's a nice balance.

I love the Space Wolves, but I find the rest of the chapters boring. I think it's because they are pretty much pagans only follow the Imperium's rules just enough to not get kicked out XD

You pretty much sum-up why I like 40k in all it's fantastically ridiculous glory. I think that the Space Marines are a little more standard boring grim-dark, which the books tend to focus on way too much, but there's so much lore to 40k that you can pick and choose what you want to focus on. And some of it is so spectacularly bonkers that it's amazing.

And then you get kind of super-edgy with Dark Elves but even them I can take because it warps around into entertaining. I do prefer regular Eldar though.

The Dark Eldar do tip things a little too far over for me as well. Like Firefly's Reavers times eleven thousand. I love the concept of Commorragh itself, though. The dark city nestled in a hidden webway dimension. I love it. (Several of the illustrations for it are also really cool, in a gothic hellscape sort of way)

I love the Dark Elves. I'd say they may be my favorite. But then again, Tolkien is my main fandom. It is like combining elves with the villains of Tolkien and then ramping it up to 1 million.

the Space Marines are boring. I wish I could find a book that was on something besides them. What I know of 40K comes from TV tropes and the 40K wiki. I want more.
