I agree that not seeing a movie in 3D isn't the end of the world, but I always, always regret not seeing Interstellar in IMAX.

The first time I saw it was on my computer, then on my television, so maybe the third time is the charm.

There's always that tangent of filmmakers going "Netflix is a SHAM to our artform and only THEATERS should exist."

If it makes you feel better, I saw it on a regular screen and then on IMAX. I don’t remember things looking that much better to be honest. I’ve always been underwhelmed by IMAX though.

I saw Interstellar in IMAX. Had to close my eyes in the bit where the spaceship spins and spins and spins. Made me dizzy.

I wish I had seen The Right Stuff on a big screen. I am glad I saw Master & Commander and Dunkirk on big screens. In the case of Dunkirk, especially for the sound of those Rolls Royce Merlins. Magic. A lot of the time, though, it doesn't matter.

I loved Dunkirk on the big screen, especially for that wonderful shot of the Spitfire flying over the beach. I wish I'd seen The Martian that way too, for the vast unattainable landscapes.

There are a few movies that I might've liked to see on the big screen just so I could appreciate the special effects and the cinematography, but I don't lose sleep over it.

Action and sci-fi movies almost always benefit from being seen on a big screen. Comedies benefit from being watched with a fun audience.

That said, I almost never go to the movies because I can't afford to.

So what? Anybody who thinks it's a "travesty" not to see Star Wars in IMAX doesn't have an opinion worth caring about.

Sometimes it doesn't really matter to me, but sometimes it does.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-09 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't actually want to see things in 3D, kind of messes with my eyes. But I do think seeing something in the theater is more of an experience. And audience reaction can be part of that experience. It makes a little more special for me. Of course, that means that it makes it more of a disappointment when a movie is not as good as expected. But I saw something in a theater where the seats vibrated slightly with loud sounds (I didn't really want to, but that was the theater it was playing in at the time I wanted) and I didn't really go for that, mostly because it wasn't really an action movie, so it was just kind of weird.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-09 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I miss seeing movies in the theater as often in theory, but the last few times I've gone, the theater has been full of rude people: talking on their phones during the movie, texting during the movie, letting their kids cry and cry and CRY.

I *never* see a movie in 3D or IMAX - rather not heave up my popcorn, thank you.
I do like seeing some movies in on the big screen - Avengers and such - but then, I just enjoy the big, comfy chair and the popcorn.

That being said - i probably only see about four movies a year in the theater, and watching other things on my computer screen is never a 'travesty'. That's just silly.

I don't care about 3D but there are some movies (Mad Max: Fury Road comes to mind) that just have extra something when seen in a theater.

I ended up seeing TLJ in 3D on accident, and that silent scene was amazing and definitely meant for 3D, but on the whole, I'm with you OP

slightly OT but there is a writer and cartoonist who I liked until he said you should always wear formal clothes to the movies and I found that such elitist bullshit I didn't bother reading anything by him after that.

There are some movies that I think would be great to watch first-time on a big screen, but I don't really care if I don't see them in the cinema when it comes down to it.

And as far as 3D goes it gives me headaches so I never care to see any movie like that.

Completely with you, OP.

I was talking to my mother-in-law about this very thing last week. I think the only movie I've ever seen that really 'needed' to be seen on the big screen was Avatar. I feel like without the 3D, it's just not as immersive and interesting. (The train scene in Hugo also made the 3D worth it for me).

(Anonymous) 2018-07-10 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
The last movie I went to the theater for was Mad Max: Fury Road, specifically because it looked like the sort of thing that I would regret not seeing on the big screen.

The AC was busted (right during a heat wave), the theater was cramped, half of the people were talking or texting on their phones, and the projectionist messed up so the whole movie was blurry.

I had to wait until it came out in blu-ray so I could actually see what I had paid to see, and now I trust my computer screen more than I will ever trust a movie theater.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-10 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly don't think seeing a movie on a big screen is ANY more enjoyable than on a TV/computer for me. It just isn't. If anything, sometimes movie screens are too large and hard to see everything at once. And I hate 3D. It looks stupid and corny and gives me a headache. I'd pay more money to not see 3D if I had to.

The only reason to see things in theaters is to see them right away to avoid spoilers, or because you're looking for something to do with friends outside of the house.

Yeah, maybe its because I come from an era of fuzzy analogue tv and blurry movies on a projection screen at my local community centre, but to me as long as I can see and hear the movie clearly, then I am happy. HD/3D/Imax/4K I don't really care about. I can't even tell the difference a lot of the time.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-10 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I'm with you there, OP. I don't mind going to the theater, but I'd much rather watch a movie at home.

IMAX to me has always been a Disney thing, or part of a city's museum. It's nice sometimes but not necessary. The only experience I care to have in a theatre is reclining leather seats, thick row partitions, and as few people in my row as possible. IMAX optional.

Fuck yeah, I have been spoiled.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-10 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I only ever watch 2D, but I do think there's a big difference between seeing it at home and seeing it at the cinema. For me, the cinema experience is much more immersive.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-11 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I like seeing the big, action-heavy, blockbuster-type movies &/or anything I don't want to be spoiled for in the theater. I hate 3D & don't care one way or the other about IMAX.

As a corollary to this, there are some movies that I have actively regretted seeing in the theater, particularly ones that were in my native language but subtitled in the language of the country I live in. It's super shitty to be the only one in the theater to laugh at a joke a few seconds before everyone else. Makes so so self-conscious and hurts my enjoyment of the movie.
