Which fandoms have the least drama?

(Anonymous) 2018-07-12 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
What are the chill fandoms? Do any exist?

Fandoms of one.

Haha, agreed.

Now I'm imagining somebody trying to argue with themselves over some aspect of their fandom. Like, maybe they like two different ships and can't decide which one's better :p.

I actually used to do that when I was younger. Now I just let myself ship whatever. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Tolkien is pretty chill most of the time. We mostly stay in our sections and enjoy things how we enjoy them, and there isn't a ton of judging others for their opinions except every once in a while.

I think this just proves that you can be very good at crafting your own space because there has been and still is a lot of drama. There are certain places where I still can't talk about Tolkien because of Feanorian wank, gatekeeping wank, etc. I wouldn't say Tolkien fandom is chill at all.

Given how shitty a lot of book purists still are to anyone who dares admit to enjoying the films, I'm going to have to call bullshit on the claim that there isn't a lot of judging other people for their opinions in Tolkien fandom.

Never seen or heard of any Jeeves and Bertie drama.

Granted, this is an older and rather small fandom, which helps, but the "Frasier" fandom spots I've found online are really quiet and friendly. People there are just happy to discuss the show/characters and remember their favorite moments/episodes and leave it at that :).

The "Bates Motel" fandom is also pretty relaxed. I think, at worst, there's been the occasional disagreement between some who ship Norma/Norman and some who ship Norma/Romero, but those disagreements have been pretty tame from what I've observed. If there are any actual bad spots within that fandom, I've been fortunate not to encounter them.

Maybe the American Girl one. There are some snobs, but most people are super nice (though there's a weird thing going on where it feels like you have to be nice and can't have disagreements).

Maybe if you average it out over 50+ years?

If you asked me a few months ago, I would've said The Good Place was chill, but then a few blogs went after me and my friends as "racists" for shipping Eleanor/Michael (two white characters) instead of shipping Eleanor/Chidi (a white character and a POC). They also completely disregarded the fact that we all do ship Eleanor/Chidi, and now I think the "call out" post has somewhere in the vicinity of 500 notes, but I can't check because the blogs also blocked me, so. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

UGH I was unaware of any of this (probably because I'm not on Tumblr that much) but this sucks :/ I also ship both Eleanor/Chidi AND Eleanor/Michael... the Eleanor/Michael dynamic is just too great to ignore... it doesn't make you or your friends in any way racist to like it.

I feel like the English speaking side of a lot of Chinese BL novel fandoms are fairly chill so far but that might be because they're not exactly huge. The Chinese part of fandom is apparently pretty crazy but it's much, much bigger and the netizens over there can be vicious so I'm not doubting it.

Most video game fandoms are pretty chill compared to other media fandoms. There's some exceptions like Undertale, Life is Strange, etc. (basically if it became popular among the Migratory Slash Fandom or on tumblr it's a fucking shit show) and of course the occasional major shit storm like the ME3 ending one. But most big games and franchises seem to be alright.

Dragon Age fandom is a dumpster fire though.
