Sleeping through pain

[personal profile] philstar22 2018-07-13 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone have any advice for actually managing to sleep when you're in a lot of pain? I really need a good night sleep tonight as I haven't slept well all week. But the only thing helping pain is my heating pad, and can't leave that on all night.

What kind of pain?

Combination of cramps and back pain.

Oh, that's a shitty combination.

What I usually do for really bad cramps is take a midol and a sleep aid at the same time, then lie down with one of those heating pads you have to warm up in hot water wrapped in a clean tea towel - it'll lose heat over time, so you don't have to worry about burning yourself the way you could with an electric heating pad. The heat eases the cramps and gives the painkiller and the sleep aid time to kick in, so there's a better chance of getting to sleep and staying asleep.

How about some Tylenol PM or something else that knocks you out? Otherwise, as an insomniac:

-Light exercise a couple hours before you go to bed (even just a walk around the block, but not too late so you don't rile yourself up at bedtime)
-Chamomile tea
-Hot shower
-Quiet dark room
-Melatonin
-And if you need it: benadryl, ibuprofen PM, and/or Nyquil. better to take with a small light snack.

I sleep with a heating pad. It automatically turns off during the night. If yours doesn't, perhaps look into one that does.

I have three. Two automatically turn off. I just always thought you were never supposed to sleep with them still on because of the fire risk.

As someone who has done this many, many times, you definitely can leave a heating pad on all night. Most of them automatically shut off after amount of certain time or if they hit a certain temperature, so I say go for it.

Really? I've always been told you never do that because it is a fire hazard, even with the auto shut off ones.

I've done it for years without a problem. And honestly, oftentimes my pain was so bad that I didn't care what the risk was if it meant I'd have any kind of relief.

I found audio books help. Those little half hour fairy tales Audible sells? The rhythm of the voices is very soothing, and the story provides a welcome distraction.
