(Anonymous) 2018-07-19 10:25 am (UTC)(link)I mean, is it really a fair criticism that Kylo Ren had a big role? He's a legacy child, the trilogy's main antagonist, and Adam Driver has top billing after the OT actors. Anyone who was disappointed by the focus on him was just setting themselves up for failure. Likewise, Rey and Finn ended the first movie separated in different solar systems, Rey and Poe had never even canonically met, Luke was said in TFA to have "walked away from it all", etc. Most of the narrative decisions in TLJ flowed naturally from TFA, but entire segments of the fandom bizarrely convinced themselves they were going to get something entirely different.
Sometimes a story going in a different direction than you wanted doesn't mean it did anything wrong, it just turned out not to be for you in the end.

1. The myth of cinnamon roll Luke, when Luke was only saved from falling to the dark side by an last-minute act of god.
2. Excessive Reylo stanning.
3. Running with the bloodline interpretation of ambiguous lines in TFA totally ignoring the dharmic influences on the canon regarding rebirth and cyclic history.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-20 01:33 pm (UTC)(link)OMG, this. As someone who is a casual Star Wars fan (I've seen the movies. That's the only canon to the VAST majority of viewers), I've never understood the criticisms of Luke in TLJ. He behaved exactly as I would have expected him to, based on previous films.
