I like this movie but this is honestly one of the most fair criticisms I've seen.

My thoughts exactly

+1

I loved TLJ but "I didn't enjoy it because it didn't do any of the things I was excited about" is 100% valid.

The hatedom that's saying "it didn't do the things I wanted, so it is Objectively Terrible Writing," THAT's petty.

All that said, TLJ split the sequel trio up pretty explicitly so that they could each get a subplot dedicated exclusive to their own character growth. I hope/believe that means they're going to come back together for part IX focused on how they interact now as more realized characters. And I hope you get to enjoy it if that happens!

Agreed completely with this person.

But Finn had close to no character development.

No, I think that's a very reasonable criticism. It's totally fair, it's just not the story they were telling.

Personally, I really liked the interactions between Rey and Luke, but that's me.

Me, too. It's my favorite part of the movie and I enjoyed the movie.

Nothing wrong with disliking it for any reason. And your reasons are perfectly reasonable. I only get irritated by the fans who tell other fans they can't like it and the assholes who send hate to the creators and actors.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-18 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was super pumped about the Sequel Trilogy after TFA, and TLJ just sucked it all away. I'm going to see the next one and see where they go but right now, Star Wars is all about the extended universe stuff for me.

Which is a bit sad. I was invested in Rey's story, and I really wanted more of Finn's past explored. Hopefully Episode 9 can bring back the magic of TFA.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-18 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconding this.

(I feel out of sync with the vocal fandom and most critics. I liked TFA more than most, it seems, and disliked TLJ.)

As a Kylo fan, this secret made me snort laugh.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-19 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think people realize that Kylo had less screen time in TLJ.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-18 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
This movie fixed Rey for me and made her a relatable and intetesting character. TFA Rey was ugh, too perfect and good at everything, that's boring.

+1000

(Anonymous) 2018-07-19 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I loved Rey in the first one. And I loved how much the little boys I knew loved her. But I get not everyone feels the same.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-19 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I was the opposite. I didn't think Rey was too perfect in TFA, and I didn't feel she was challenged in TLJ. She had a much better arc in TFA.

Yeah, that seems like a perfectly valid reason not to enjoy the movie and as noted you are being fair about it. Not petty at all.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-19 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Honesty this was my biggest gripe with the new movie as well. I get that breaking them up to explore their characterization in other ways is good, and I even liked the addition of Rose to the sequel gang. But I wish they hadn't ditched Poe so much. And I adore Finn and Rey's dynamic and missed it sorely.

I did like it but separating out all the dynamics I liked from the first one was very disappointing.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-19 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
The only reason you would be petty with those complaints is if your headcanons for your favorite characters soured you on the film.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-19 10:25 am (UTC)(link)
It feels like a lot of people spent two years absolutely certain where the sequel trilogy was going (Rey Skywalker and/or mentor!Luke, Finn/Rey, the new "trio", Kylo being uncomplicatedly evil) and then got upset by TLJ due to their own built-up expectations being dashed.

I mean, is it really a fair criticism that Kylo Ren had a big role? He's a legacy child, the trilogy's main antagonist, and Adam Driver has top billing after the OT actors. Anyone who was disappointed by the focus on him was just setting themselves up for failure. Likewise, Rey and Finn ended the first movie separated in different solar systems, Rey and Poe had never even canonically met, Luke was said in TFA to have "walked away from it all", etc. Most of the narrative decisions in TLJ flowed naturally from TFA, but entire segments of the fandom bizarrely convinced themselves they were going to get something entirely different.

Sometimes a story going in a different direction than you wanted doesn't mean it did anything wrong, it just turned out not to be for you in the end.

This so hard, see also:

1. The myth of cinnamon roll Luke, when Luke was only saved from falling to the dark side by an last-minute act of god.
2. Excessive Reylo stanning.
3. Running with the bloodline interpretation of ambiguous lines in TFA totally ignoring the dharmic influences on the canon regarding rebirth and cyclic history.

I love that Rey and Poe meeting was so unimportant that TLJ retconned their original introduction to each other in the TFA novelization.

Honestly, I actually like the movie on the whole, but the criticisms I DO have of it are exactly this. I like the characters. I wanted to see them interact with each other and further develop the relationships established in the first film.
