No disrespect to Aunt May but. It's Aunt May.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
It's also Marisa Tomei. Who is fucking gorgeous. I'd be all up in a tony/strange/aunt may threesome. And rdj and Marisa have insane chemistry--just watch them in Only You from the 90s. It's cheeseball af but I love it and they are in fire together. I ship may/tony just based on past performance.

I'm not even in the Marvel fandom but no. People are under no obligation to include characters they don't want to include. I'd much rather a female character that I liked wasn't in a fic than to have her shoehorned in to either be bashed or written badly when it's clear the writer only wants to write m/m. Let people write what they want. If I don't like it, I'll find something else that has the things I do like in it or write it myself. No one needs to add women if that's not the story they want to tell. It's not 'erasing' her. She's still there in canon.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
But is it shoehorning if she's canonically this character's guardian and a big part of his life? Surely there's ways to include both the existing family (which is literally the two of them) and the m/m ship.

I don't even know why Steve would WANT to be any kind of parent to Peter Parker, but that's just me...

(For the record, I'm speaking as someone who likes everyone listed in the secret.)

To be fair, superfamily is not nearly as big as it used to be. And most of it came out before Civil War.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Wasn’t this, word for word, a comment on the last superfamily secret?

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah somebody probably just made it into a secret

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you new?

Yup.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought it'd make a nice secret, and this community needs more secrets so I made it into a secret. We have multiple secret makers here and this happens a lot, so no need to get concerned.

As much as I like Tony being paternal towards Peter, I have zero interest in a kind of family arrangement with any of these characters. Maybe it's because I don't ship Tony with anyone (except kinda sorta Pepper), or because Peter isn't a little kid, or because I haven't seen Homecoming and maybe there's something I missed, or I dunno.

Okay.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I like May, but a lot of the movies do not give her much screen time. Also, if they are writing Superfamily, it seems like a way for that to happen is for her not to exist or only be peripheral to Peter's life. I mean, a lot of times in fic, when they give a character a new family, they get rid of their existing one, make the existing one horrible, or just don't acknowledge that the existing one ever existed.

Re: Okay.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"...but a lot of the movies do not give her much screen time"

Uh, isn't that one of the basic functions of fanfic, though? To explore characters and situations that aren't always covered in the canon?

Personally, I think of this as another type of character-bashing. Lots of people are too lazy or lack the writing chops to write plausible scenarios for their ship, so they can't really achieve it without doing one of the things you list above.

That picture of Aunt May looks exactly like Mariah Carey to me. I am squinting at it going, Did Marisa Tomei have work done or was the role recast or--?

Sorry, I just got totally distracted!

That *is* Mariah Carey. How weird.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
It is Mariah Carey. And the "I don't know her" was shade against Jennifer Lopez. I think she was asked a question about her, and she just smiled and said "I don't know her."

Eh. It's fanfic. You write what you like. I hate the fics where Bucky is basically forgotten and/or paired off with Natasha so i just...don't read them.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Superfamily sucks because of the infantization of Peter and the erasure of Aunt May because she's important to his development. Not because they're erasing Aunt May for slash. Slash writers have no obligation to write about female characters.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
When the fuck is fun fandom stuff ERASING canon?
Don't you ERASE canon every time you ship a non-canon ship? Every time you have a head canon?

Like, how many people ship Stucky and not Staron. Stop ERASING Sharon.

God, you STOP ERASING AUNT MAY fuckers are so annoying.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
I think there are two separate issues here. One is ignoring canon to fit an AU. That’s standard practice and shouldn’t be a problem for anyone as long as the fic is tagged/summarized properly.. Another is ignoring (or worse, trashing or even killing) female characters that get in the way of a slash ship. I hate that personally, even as a long-time slash writer myself. But I don’t think it’s egregious here, bc Aunt May is not a canon love interest (flirting aside) so she’s not “in the way” in the same sense. Therefore, leaving her out doesn’t seem as...misogynistic? Not sure what word I want to use here...

I always see family fics are lightweight fluff, no realism involved, just a fantasy where we have a Leave-It-to-Beaver style storyline, only in Superfamilies, we get some superpower-related hijinks. I am of mixed opinions regarding this stuff. I do like me some good angst, but sometimes it's nice to just have the heroes being happy, hanging out, cracking jokes with each other.

But I could never really picture Superfamilies being about slash or really related to sex. Maybe it's because I'm ace, but I just like the idea that they all just love and take care of everyone and the relationship isn't just about sex.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
It's okay, anon, now you get Dr. Strange and Tony being Peter's dads while they regularly bash Tony's ex-husband Steve!

but fr though, fuck this superfamily bullshit.

Fanwork can't "erase" canon. You can dislike something without reaching to say its anti sj and the worst to ever exist when its not that deep.
