Inspired by 2: What things are you picky about in movies/tv, and what errors do you not care about?

What errors in movies or tv bother you, and what errors don't make a difference for you?

Re: Inspired by 2: What things are you picky about in movies/tv, and what errors do you not care abo

I'm not suuuuuper picky and I don't insist on strict historical accuracy but I suspect I'm still pickier than most people. Basically I don't like it when stuff is so egregiously wrong that it stands out even to someone like me, who isn't a historian or expert on historical fashion, customs, etc. It's not because I'm a purist, it's because it's just too distracting and pulls me out of the story.

As long as the story is good, I really don't care about all that much.

I mostly agree with you. If they try to pretend they are more accurate than they are, I may get annoyed. But generally, I just want to enjoy something. My dad's a history teacher, so he can't watch too many historical movies without getting annoyed at inaccuracies. So I don't watch them with him because I'd get a running lecture on all the movie's errors when I just want to enjoy.

Inaccuracy doesn't bother me in itself, it just bothers me when it doesn't make any fucking sense

Same. Like, I might grumble or roll my eyes if something is stupid (especially drug related stuff because that's my field) but as long as it doesn't take me out of the story then I can overlook a lot of shit.

Most medical/scientific errors I can live with. I'll often whine about errors, but generally they won't get me too upset or stop me watching. There are exceptions. One that perpetually bugs me is when medical shows shock a flat line. You do not shock a flat line. Another that really bothered me was when The Good Doctor used a used straw on an organ intended for transplant. There are so many bacteria in the human mouth that would likely be on a straw and organ recipients are so vulnerable to infection because of the immunosuppressants that I just couldn't take it and stopped watching the show never to watch again. (It would have been so easy for them to find an unopened straw instead. Such a small thing but so big for me.)

I know a little about a lot, so a jack of all trades and master of none, and if something can't get everything right at least in broad strokes I will rage like a thousand volcanoes. Is it so hard to have a strong foundation in the basics??

Plot holes aren't a big deal to me as long as the characterization is believable and dynamic. But apparently they really drive some people up the wall.

It's almost an obsession with some people, yeah

To me it depends on the plot hole, to be honest? Like I've seen some people point out ones that I didn't notice, but I've also noticed some where I went, "Okay well that's dumb." but I still enjoyed the thing overall.

I've seen so many so-called plot holes that boiled down to "characters didn't turn OOC for plot convenience" or "they didn't think of something in a dramatic situation I could think of while sitting in comfort at home".

Like, sure, characters don't always act the most logical way, and you're totally free to call them stupid for not thinking of something, but that doesn't make it a plot hole.

Re: Inspired by 2: What things are you picky about in movies/tv, and what errors do you not care abo

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
It depends what kind of movie or show it is. If it's a serious documentary I expect everything to be well-researched and accurate. If it's a dramatisation of the Tudors having lots of sex, I don't mind if the fashion and language is modernised a little to make it more watchable.

I will admit that some super basic things do piss me off. If you have a show about medicine, maybe pay someone to read through your scripts and check for very blatant inaccuracies? Same for using weapons and fighting, or surviving in the middle of nowhere. It is very easy to track down people with this knowledge and pay them a small fee to correct your assumptions. Not doing so makes you look like a fucking idiot.
I do play a game with very inaccurate shows and movies where I say the word "dead" every time someone does something wrong that would get them killed in a real situation. I would make it a drinking game but I like my liver.

Animal related stuff bothers me a lot. Stuff like every animal just acts like a dog, incorrect sounds (Can someone please wrestle the red-tailed hawk sound away from Hollywood?), animals being in places/time periods they shouldn't be, etc.

And also remove the Harris hawks from medieval Europe. HOW DID THEY GET THERE.

Red-tailed hawks say "TSEEEEEEER!"

I learned this in Animorphs.

well-educated characters using extremely bad grammar. argh.

That's not an error. "Well-educated" is not synonymous with "speaks and/or writes like they digested The Elements of Style". Particularly when you're talking about people who are well-educated but not focused on arts and humanities, but even people in a field that is heavily writing focused will often use terrible grammar. (Yes, even when writing for a formal publication. There's a reason editorial staff continue to exist.)

I didn't say "speaks and/or writes like they digested The Elements of Style". go condescend to someone else.

nayrt but I think you're missing ayrt's point. Being well-educated or intelligent doesn't mean you use standard grammar. Plus, grammar is a constantly changing thing, it's never been a solid right/wrong thing. And someone speaking in a certain dialect that uses different grammatical rules - rules you consider wrong - doesn't mean they are speaking a less valid form of English (or whatever language). The go-to example is African American Vernacular English.

I never said I considered a dialect that had different grammatical rules wrong either. I don't.

Wow. Bad example since that construction is both a part of many regional dialects and one of the most common grammatical errors made by highly educated people.
