Inspired by 2: What things are you picky about in movies/tv, and what errors do you not care about?

What errors in movies or tv bother you, and what errors don't make a difference for you?

I'm not suuuuuper picky and I don't insist on strict historical accuracy but I suspect I'm still pickier than most people. Basically I don't like it when stuff is so egregiously wrong that it stands out even to someone like me, who isn't a historian or expert on historical fashion, customs, etc. It's not because I'm a purist, it's because it's just too distracting and pulls me out of the story.

As long as the story is good, I really don't care about all that much.

Inaccuracy doesn't bother me in itself, it just bothers me when it doesn't make any fucking sense

Most medical/scientific errors I can live with. I'll often whine about errors, but generally they won't get me too upset or stop me watching. There are exceptions. One that perpetually bugs me is when medical shows shock a flat line. You do not shock a flat line. Another that really bothered me was when The Good Doctor used a used straw on an organ intended for transplant. There are so many bacteria in the human mouth that would likely be on a straw and organ recipients are so vulnerable to infection because of the immunosuppressants that I just couldn't take it and stopped watching the show never to watch again. (It would have been so easy for them to find an unopened straw instead. Such a small thing but so big for me.)

I know a little about a lot, so a jack of all trades and master of none, and if something can't get everything right at least in broad strokes I will rage like a thousand volcanoes. Is it so hard to have a strong foundation in the basics??

Plot holes aren't a big deal to me as long as the characterization is believable and dynamic. But apparently they really drive some people up the wall.

It depends what kind of movie or show it is. If it's a serious documentary I expect everything to be well-researched and accurate. If it's a dramatisation of the Tudors having lots of sex, I don't mind if the fashion and language is modernised a little to make it more watchable.

I will admit that some super basic things do piss me off. If you have a show about medicine, maybe pay someone to read through your scripts and check for very blatant inaccuracies? Same for using weapons and fighting, or surviving in the middle of nowhere. It is very easy to track down people with this knowledge and pay them a small fee to correct your assumptions. Not doing so makes you look like a fucking idiot.
I do play a game with very inaccurate shows and movies where I say the word "dead" every time someone does something wrong that would get them killed in a real situation. I would make it a drinking game but I like my liver.

Animal related stuff bothers me a lot. Stuff like every animal just acts like a dog, incorrect sounds (Can someone please wrestle the red-tailed hawk sound away from Hollywood?), animals being in places/time periods they shouldn't be, etc.

What do you think your favorite pairings are like, sexually? Assuming this is in character as possible and not the typical PWP fic where it could be anyone with names swapped out.

I've put a lot of thought into this, actually. Melkor is extremely dominant most of the time, though he occasionally likes to sub. Mairon, however, has more experience (as in, he has experience, Melkor has no pre-Mairon experience). And Mairon is more creative and the one with the ideas. His need for praise in adoration comes out as a need to please when it comes to sex. He can get off on pleasuring someone else even if he isn't touched at all. At the same time, he's selfish and demanding, so he always makes sure he gets everything he wants in bed. But mostly he's just creative and enthusiastic and loves pleasure and sex. He's all about indulging both himself and his partner. So they've probably tried everything at least one, and Mairon was almost certainly the one who suggested it.

I think Hannibal and Will have the roughest sex ever, and they both enjoy dominating and being dominated by the other one. I don't mean anything as elaborate as an actual BDSM scene, but more like, they fall into bed and one of them ends up on top and rides the hell out of the other one. There are never safewords. Also, Will is totally into choking Hannibal. Their first few times might actually be hatesex. In the morning, I suppose, they might have slow, leisurely sex, but everything else would be rough and possessive.

Look, all I'm saying is that every version of Loki is the mouthiest sub ever and Sigyn can put her fettering abilities to good use.

What happens to anyone who is a prison of Melkor or Sauron. I mean, we've got Maedhros who was there for about 20 years and ended up hung on the side of a mountain by a single wrist. And then there's Celebrimbor who ends up filled with arrows and hung on a pole as a banner. And Hurin, who has to watch his family destroy themselves. And Finrod, who dies killing the werewolf who kills him and who just finished killing his men.

Basically, Melkor and Sauron are both meant to be the devil, literally in Melkor's case. They're sadistic, evil, petty, and do this stuff just for the fun of it. And if you are a good guy or just a normal guy and end up in their fortresses? Really, really sucks to be you.

Bad enough to be a normal prisoner. If they want something from you or you are important in some way? You are in for a very painful, miserable time. Those who died in battle were probably the lucky ones.

How to break up with someone

(Anonymous) 2018-07-23 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
I'm way too old to be asking this question, but all of my relationships have ended amicably/due to outside circumstances. I'm in a relationship now of a couple months, and I'm just not feeling anything. No attraction anymore. My partner is an awesome person and we have a lot of similar interests, but I just feel awkward and I don't think my attraction is going to return. I want to end it, but I'm the worst in the world at being assertive and the thought of having "the talk" really terrifies me. I don't know how I'll be able to make the words come out.

Any advice? Should I do this in a public space where we can both "get away" or in the privacy of one of our apartments, where potential emotions won't be so humiliating? Should it be a break up the moment we meet up, or at the end of a night after doing something together? I want to end it as kindly as possible, with respect for someone who I like a lot in a platonic way. Is it better to be quiet and not "pretend" from here on until we have the chance to meet up, or is that rude? I don't want to blindside them.

I know I'm being immature, I'm just really scared to do this.
