Why?

They are mostly just a bunch of sports stuff. Pretty uninspired. We got 2 more days though, so hopefully have have some more.

I like the DVa skin, but the other ones are pretty meh. :/

I'm part of an older fandom that isn't that active anymore, but there is this super prolific author who writes about my two favorite ships and tropes, and publishes at least one or two fics per week.

There is only one tiny, little problem: their writing is awful!

And it's not just the fact that their grammar and spelling is atrocious, there's also continuity failures (sometimes within the same short chapter or even the same paragraph), thesaurus abuse, the cringiest purple prose, and a tendency to write every character as if they were particularly childish teens.

I had to stop tracking the tags for those two ships because out of every twenty new fics there might be one or two that aren't theirs and I was tired of getting my hopes up just to be disappointed.

I've had a similar problem in an older fandom as well. Mostly, this author who used to spam the archive with fic was writing for this one ship I liked but everything about their fic was stuff I hated. M-preg, terrible writing, maximum OOC, uninspired AUs that made not a lick of sense and to top it all off, inconsistent/faulty tagging. I gave up on that fandom after a while.

Oh man that would suuuuuck. There's a particular trope I'm really into (but for some reason is most popular in genres I'm not interested in) so I'm always checking the AO3 tag for it. I get really excited when a fandom/pairing I like pops up, because it's so rare, but it's almost always awful.

Oh man, I used to be in a fandom kind of like that... the writer wasn't a bad person exactly but her writing was kind of, well... cringey. Full of romanticized semi-rapey stuff that she felt was okay because she really, really loved the main male character and thought he was hot. And this person wasn't a dumb teenager, they were in their late 40s/early 50s, ffs. She thought her age and experience (barf) made her a self appointed Den Mother of fandom. I avoided her and her work like the bubonic plague.

Why oh why is m-preg (and also omegaverse) so damn popular in Chinese BL novels. For someone who hates that shit, it's like navigating a minefield when searching for new reading material.
Doesn't help that when you try asking for recs, one part of the answers is people reccing things where they admit they don't even know if that kind of content is included and the other part is people going "this has m-preg/omegaverse but you still should ~totally~ read it because it's so great" or "aww yes I didn't like it at first either but now I love it so you should just try it uwu!". No. Go away.

It's popular in BL manga too and people say the same things when I ask for recs. "I know you said no omegaverse, but the story is so good!". Yeah, no. I don't want to read anything that even hints at omegaverse shit because it just doesn't jive with me. Very frustrating.

Same, lol. And it's only been 9 months.

So recently I got really into a new pairing. They have the exact kind of chemistry and dynamic that usually makes for a popular ship (two attractive dudes who are good friends, people describe them as having a "bromance", they have entertaining banter, give each other a hard time but you know they love each other, etc.). It's kind of an obscure fandom so I knew there wouldn't be much fic, if any, but I figured if there was any, surely it would be about this ship. Nope. There's a small handful of fic, but it's all about an entirely different pairing.

Pairing #1 is a white guy and a black guy, Pairing #2 is two white dudes. People talk about racism in fandom and I used to naively think that surely there was some other reason why certain pairings weren't popular and others were. But over and over and over again, it keeps happening. Pairings that have the type of character dynamics that you know if they were both white, would be massively popular, but there's just nothing.

It's depressing. :(

tbh anyone who claims that there isn't fandom bias against certain types of ships are either blind or willfully ignorant.

i see friendship pairs in media that would absolutely ping all of fandoms shipping buttons... except that one of them is black, or just non-white in general, so there's nothing.

but have two white-guys have the same dynamic, or even 2 secs of screentime and watch as fic will spawn.

and it happens, over and over.

it's really not a coincidence.

In the Psych fandom I used to ship Gus and Shawn, but Lassiter and Shawn were a much more popular ship. At the time I told myself it was probably because people like rival/enemy ships more than friendly ships but eventually I had to face the fact that if Gus were white the fandom would have been very different.

it's not so much a rant but the new season of voltron drops this friday and i'm gonna sit back and wait for the wank to unfold.

it's gonna be great.

More of a general complaint, but the fact that so much of romantic media/fandom aimed at women who are into men is focused on the "Alpha Male" just leaves me cold. It doesn't help that "alpha male" always just seems to be code of abusive asshole.

I want more news about the new Tiger & Bunny! We don't even know if they're returning to the same characters or what.

NEVERMIND. THE NEWS IS VERY DISAPPOINTING.
