Mildly OT but I read this book title as: Court A Thorns Of Roses And.

It's damn poor design, that's for sure.

The first time I read it as Court Thorns Roses.

The typography is seriously fucking terrible

(Anonymous) 2018-08-10 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I had to share at it for a bit to figure out what word order made the most sense.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-09 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess good for you for getting that far? This book was being recommended all over my usual online hangouts as a Beauty and the Beast fan, and I never finished it and barely remember what I did read. From your description it doesn’t sound like I would’ve liked it any better if I powered through it.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-09 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. I guess I could see where there are elements and similar themes as Beauty and the Beast, but I don't think I would've made that connection if you hadn't said it. A lot of people like the idea of hot faeries more than I do, but I started off with a lukewarm enthusiasm that just died at the end.

The more you know of the original Beauty and the Beast story, the more blatant the connection is.

How did you want it to be pronounced?

(Anonymous) 2018-08-09 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Because that seems like a perfectly reasonable pronunciation of that spelling to me.

Re: How did you want it to be pronounced?

(Anonymous) 2018-08-09 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Not the OP but I could also see it just as something like 'fair'.

Re: How did you want it to be pronounced?

(Anonymous) 2018-08-09 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Also not OP and that's how I would assume it was pronounced.

ayrt

Sure, I could see that, too. But what's so wrong with Fay-ruh? I mean, I could see it being valid given 'genre' or 'Deirdre', both of which are pronounced with two syllables and the 'e' having an 'uh' sound.

Re: How did you want it to be pronounced?

(Anonymous) 2018-08-10 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Oh imo there's nothing wrong with it ending up as 'fay-ruh'.

Re: How did you want it to be pronounced?

(Anonymous) 2018-08-10 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I thought it was pronounced “fire"

(Anonymous) 2018-08-09 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
A fae named Fay-ruh. Uh huh.

I once played a video game called Starwish. It had djinni named Ginny and Johnny, a marid named Mare, and an efreet named Nefertiti.

These books are also homophobic and play heavily into rape culture, so you dodged a bullet, OP.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-10 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, I read a chunk of the first one and remember nothing about it except that I disliked it. How so?

(Anonymous) 2018-08-10 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
i agree about them playing into rape culture but don't so much agree with them being homophobic. there's a lot of heteronormativity that sjm tries to make up for in the third book, but she does a very poor job at handling it.

NAYRT

(Anonymous) 2018-08-10 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the third book was extremely homophobic, albeit almost certainly unintentionally. The narrative presents the idea that a character's friends could easily accept murder, betrayal, secrecy, and torture, but they COULDN'T POSSIBLY accept her being a lesbian sends a really really bad message.

same anon

(Anonymous) 2018-08-10 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, that's mainly what i was referring to with maas handling her making up for it really poorly. it's pretty clear that the character in question wasn't intended to be gay and she did some rearranging with her intentions for said character to show see, she CAN write lgbtq+ characters, guys!, but her reasons for having her keep it from her friends were flimsy at best and, as you said, homophobic at worst.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-10 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
oooooooooh, an acotar/sarah j maas secret!

it's been a while since i've read this book, but i do remember thinking "oh, thank god" when they turned her. the last thing i wanted to read was her agonizing about how she'd grow old and he'd look the same. that's actually one of the few positive thoughts i have about this series.
