What are some of the craziest houses you have seen?

I have been house hunting recently and yesterday I saw a house straight from the 70s. The kitchen was orange. It had a trash compactor!

The whole bathroom was blue. Blue shower, blue toilet, blue sink. It was crazy.

However, the most amazing thing was that the entry way walls were covered in FLOCKED VELVET wallpaper. Glorious fuzziness.

That kitchen looks exactly like a friend's parent's house. I mean it was most likely the same company that built properties in the US and UK, but still. I find it a little weird that it's a match.

Okay, so I agree that that is all very 70s, but all I could think about, as someone who has just one tiny counter in her kitchen was "Damn, look at all of that wonderful counter space!"

that's fun to look at and is giving me flashbacks to being a 70s kid and being in the kitchen listening to Led Zeppelin on the radio and fixing myself a snack. :)
(what's unusual about trash compactors?)

I've never seen one. I didn't even know they made them anymore.

I've got one in my apt now. Lots of people I know have them.

Maybe they were useful back when people had little Oscar the Grouch trash cans, but now people use the big plastic wheely-bins. The 70s kitchen in the house I grew up in didn't have one, but there really wouldn't have been room to put one.

I kept thinking there were two dishwashers in the photo you posted until I remembered you said there was a trash compactor. Something like that would be such a space hog in my kitchen.

OWWW that kitchen!

OMG, those countertops were just like my grandma's. That was pretty much her kitchen.

I grew up in a house with kitchen countertops that looked very similar! This would've been in the mid 80s. We didn't have that exact wallpaper, but the color scheme wasn't far off.

when we were house hunting, we came across this place that was just. Weird. It was two-story with a partially-finished basement, but when we got inside we discovered that the top floor had been converted into a separate apartment at some point, but now the owners were trying to sell it as a single house. There was a second kitchen on the top floor. It was actually a nicer kitchen than the one downstairs. All the rooms downstairs were like satellites off the living room, there was no flow between them. Upstairs was this weird half-bedroom loft. Honestly, I'd have lived in that upstairs apartment, it was funky-cool, except that the entry was through the bathroom. Like, they had tacked this extra entryway onto the back of the house to make it separate, with a rickety old stairway, above and behind the garage. When you came in through that door you had to pass through the bathroom in order to get to the rest of the apartment. That was also the only stairwell to get to the second floor so regardless of whether it was an apartment or more house, you had to go through that bathroom.

Downstairs was also a creepy melange of avocado-green kitchen walls, musty 1970's carpet, and half the basement drywall was missing because of flood damage they didn't tell us about. We took a hard pass.

A friend and I went to the Winchester house a couple of years ago, it was sooooo cool. I honestly both do and don't want to do one of the night tours, because the pragmatic part of me says, it's just a house! While the part of me that believes in the things that go bump in the night says, a potentially really haunted house!

I would love to go to the Winchester House, especially the full moon tour! I haven't largely because it's kind of expensive.

It was a beautiful house, albeit very very weird, but the whole tour was super interesting. And yeah, I would love to do the full moon tour, but deep down I am a super big sissy and I'm pretty sure I would die of fright, lol.

I saw a little girl's room in a house painted in pink and gray stripes. Like, the whole room (AND CEILING) looked like someone had taken a 12" roller, rolled it from floor to ceiling, then switched colors and done the same. Rinse and repeat.

Went to see this house built in the late 1800s. The formerly external basement entrance had been enclosed with a small addition, which was good, but the second floor (which was really just a mostly-unfinished walk-up attic that would have needed a ton of work since the first floor "bedrooms" were more like closets that wouldn't even fit a queen-sized bed) was only accessible through the BATHROOM. The house had one bathroom, definitely not original and clearly a DIY. The floor and lower part of the shower stall (no tub) were poured concrete and actually pretty well done. Still, there was a narrow staircase leading from the bathroom up to the attic/second floor and that was the only way up. Hella awkward.

There were also several houses I only saw in pictures that had carpeted kitchens. Those were an immediate NO so I didn't even bother asking for a showing. Who carpets a kitchen and thinks that's a good idea?

I think the best one was a historical house and the owners gave the tour. They were very serious period lifestyle followers. The house had no indoor toilet and no electricity. At one point someone pointed out a chamber pot and said "so you piss in this?" and they were like "yes!".

Y'all need jesus.

In the same town there was another historical place that was just absolutely crammed full of creepy old dolls. It was completely pink and had floral everything. It was haunting.

When I was house-hunting with my parents, we saw this... super weird house. The realtor said the owners "adapted it to their taste" and, well. They sure did that.

The front was gorgeous. The driveway was new and super gorgeous, with a parallel sort-of staircase with polished granite on both sides going up to the front door. And for one thing, the garage entrance was right there. Literally, the front door, and then on your right is the garage door. And the inside was just... the layout was super, super weird. The downstairs was all painted in lime green, and the half on the left of the front door was just a long, weird room with a ping-pong table in the middle and a desk at the end in front of the giant windows. (With a super nice view.) On the other side was two (maybe three?) bedrooms, a bathroom with a very fancy tub, and a kitchen that was just a long counter with a sink. (The fridge was across the hallway tucked against the bathroom.) It was all really cramped and just ??? because the actual house was upstairs.

Upstairs wasn't quite as weird, but the kitchen had these very modern-looking, bright red chairs, and the cupboards were all painted... I think bright yellow? There was a lot of weird colour. The bathroom was circular and kinda stuck out into the living room, and I think there was another bedroom. There was also a patio with "Italian deck furniture" that cost eleven thousand dollars and that the owners couldn't bring with them when they moved away, and were hoping to get four thousand for. (They were nice but absolutely not worth more than maybe 800.) They also had a giant spinny chair in the living room and I think like three TVs throughout the house.

I mean, I feel kind of bad for the owners, because they obviously spent a goddamn fortune on this place and now they have to leave for whatever reason, but also what the hell, I don't think that house was actually livable. It was... ridiculous.

Mine. I inherited it when my mom passed away. Years ago, a swarm of bees moved in, so mom paid someone to come remove them. The standard warrantee was for a year. Just after a year later, it happened again. She paid someone again. And it just kept happening until finally she gave up because it was 2-3k per removal. That was, idk, 8-10 years ago? One whole wall of one of the bedrooms buzzes now.
