I haven't finished the manga, but from what I hear tell, his dying is really out of bleeding nowhere and comes across as tragedy-for-the-sake-of-tragedy, not because it was a necessary part of his character arc.

If the manga ending really is as weak as I'm told it is, I expected the anime would take the chance to fix that - at least for the first couple of episodes. But given how faithful it's been to the manga this far in, I don't really think so any longer. The best I hope for is that it comes across as good in this version, at least.
