Inspired by 1: What classic literature would you like to see adapted to film?

(Anonymous) 2018-09-10 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Whether it's a classic that hasn't been done recently (or at all) or one where you'd like a do-over, what do you want to see?

The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery. Seriously, why is that not a movie yet?

It's such a cute romance. The sad thing is, I'm not sure that kind of thing is in fashion at the moment. Look at the current adaptation of Anne of Green Gables where people feel the need to make it "gritty" or whatever.

Animal Farm. But only if they could do it animated in the style of Martin Rosen movies (Plague Dogs and Watership Down).

I'd really like a Lord of the Flies adaptation that doesn't hold back on the imagery.

A version of Fahrenheit 451 that isn't terrible (looking at you HBO).

Phantom of the Opera. Eh. Not sure it counts as "classic" and it's been adapted plenty.

But.

I want something that takes more than the barebones of the plot, and keeps the Persian, and the swarms of little dancers, and Raoul's Older Brother Doing His Best even though he disapproves of Raoul/Christine, and the tunnels left by the Communards... something that keeps all the chaotic life that Leroux brought to it. You could get five or six tv episodes out of it easy peasy.

Directed/produced by Guillermo del Toro, please? (I’m always so impressed by the amount of research and symbolism he crams into his stuff, and of course he loves monsters.)

Ooh, del Toro would be awesome...

I want a Trojan War that's like a long epic series instead of a movie, and doesn't cower away from including the gods/magic (seriously what is this obsession with un-magicking a mythical event). Like, I want all the sex, the gay sex, the badass Amazons, etc. Like a Battle Royale of heroes. Would be so siccckkkk

Yes! I want the gods and goddesses and all of the sex. Make it an actual adaption, please. Also do the Odyssey. And the Aeneid.

Anything from ancient mythology in space.

The Epic of Gilgamesh - IN SPACE! Enkidu is a Cylon and they travel to another galaxy to find an alien spore that will stop cell degeneration.

The Odyssey - IN SPACE! Odysseus is literally lost in space and deals with all sorts of aliens. Circe is an alien scientist who genetically modifies Odysseus' friends.

The Mahabharata - IN SPACE! Warring planets or solar systems instead of warring families. The gods are bio-modded transhumans.

You know there was a cartoon series that was exactly this?

Caveat: It's old and maybe not that good if you don't have a nostalgia filter? but it does exist and it had its charm in its time.

(Also, it's not a very faithful adaptation, there are added original characters, roughly one third of the episodes come from the Odyssey, another third inspired from other Greek myths, and the rest is made up. But at the time I thought it was at least coherently made up with the space/myth themes.)

The Silmarillion. But only as a high budget, epic tv show done by HBO or by something like Netflix.

Also, how about the Ramayana. We got some of it in A Little Princess, but I think it would make a great movie.

Mansfield Park. I know Jane Austen has been done to death but that particular book not so much, and the most recent movie apparently changed everything and I didn't want to have to watch it.

In line with my above comment in another thread: I'd love a more faithful movie/miniseries adaption of Enid Blyton's St. Clare's or Malory Towers, but set in the appropriate time and not dumbed down the way showrunners think movies/series for children have to be.
