Jess was a shitty boyfriend, but he was my favorite. Love the bad boy thing, love the way he could get her riled up like no one else.

actually there was at least one other character on Gilmore Girls who could consistently get Rory riled up

(Anonymous) 2018-09-12 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
you're into Rory/Paris, I get it

It's strictly true that he was the best of her boyfriends, but he still completely sucked shit. None of her boyfriends were any good at all and I rejected them in whole and in part. Not even once.

Am pretty positive Rory's best 'boyfriend' was Paris tbh

(Anonymous) 2018-09-11 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Right?!

That's probably true, but Jess seems to have been the only one who grew as a person, after.

I think he might make a decent boyfriend, now. But I can't say Rory would necessarily be a decent girlfriend. I think she still has some growing to do.

Agreed. I hated seeing her make the sane mistakes almost ten years later.

Jess is actually too good for her at this point. I strongly disliked him as a teen but now he's got his shit together.

I agree, OP!

I dunno. I don't recognize this guy, so I stopped watching before he was around. I liked Jess better because he was into books and stuff like she was, and seemed to challenge her a bit, make her think and fight a little.

Dean always did the 'omg, she's gonna look at booooooks!!' eye-rolly thing and just seemed to want her to be a cookie-cutter gf instead of her own person.

This is what was frustrating to me about Gilmore Girls, because once they decided they wanted Rory to have a new boyfriend they'd change the last one's personality. Rory started dating Dean because when they first met her understood her literary references, and they were often depicted sharing books and music with each other. But once Jess was introduced Dean steadily changed until there was nothing left of the character Rory had met at the beginning. The same thing happened to Jess but it's most obvious with Dean because at least you can see why Rory liked Jess and his "development" at least vaguely made sense even if it was implausible (and he did get his shit together eventually), whereas the character Dean became seems entirely incompatible with Rory in every way.

YES. Exactly.

I agree OP sans the Jess thing as am fairly certain not all folks who liked him were attracted to him. Looks-wise I'd pick Dean and I did not mind him as a character or boyfriend the first season whilst others get wtf. Jess, I really hated as he was not a 'bad boy' archetype for me at all but like a stuck up tit in a rich-guy condescending way (and he wasn't that). Logan was more of a classic example and he should be playing a the arrogant posh bloke. I did enjoy the last season because you got to see characters actually portrayed negatively and it made me wonder about his fiancee as he never struck me as one to cheat in a clandestine way but more of 'arranged marriage thing and we both carry on with our own thing'. Essentially, it seemed as Rory was the actual cheater buuuut it would be lovely if they shown the fiancee in question (as Logan could be also in the wrong). I have a lot of feelings on this show as am one of those former teens who watched it with their parent growing up. Do not judgeeeeee meeeeeee...

P.S I'd agree Paris was best for Rory iiiiiifffff her characterisation did not go as flat as Earth is not in two last seasons (new one is especially bad). Then again - Laine and Sookie got same treatment albeit more of last and new season.

Winner by defalt, Logan

I think I like Dean the most on a personal level. During the second season I was pretty much always on his side and wondered why the hell Rory didn't just break up with him already. She strung Dean along long after she stopped having romantic feelings for him. I didn't like that he cheated on his wife, obviously but I had some sympathy for him since he clearly threw himself into that relationship to get over Rory.

I hated Jess. It wasn't how he treated Rory, it was how he treated Luke. Luke supported him, backed him up, defended him to everyone and Jess treated that love like it was nothing. He wasn't great to Rory, either. I didn't understand how they fit together. All they shared was books. Dean at least shared Rory's Star's Hallow world and got along well with Lorelai and Logan shared school Rory.

I also like that Logan seemed to always be on Rory's level and never acted like she was the only thing in his life, so it was more balanced. But even then it wasn't great.

When was Dean ever verbally abusive??

(Anonymous) 2018-09-12 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
People on the "Dean was abusive" train often point to the time when he was upset about her reaction to him telling her he loved her for the first time, and the time when she was in a car crash with Jess and she was nervous about telling Dean what had happened.

Logan was the best boyfriend, but not the best for Rory. I think she needs someone who'll push her a little when she's getting caught up in herself.
