Generally, he doesn't treat him the same in fics. A lot of them are about Steve learning to adjust.

In the movies they have not spent enough time where they are not in a crisis to know how they interact. What WE have seen on screen indicates that Steve is letting Bucky be his own person.

Yeah, not sure where OP is seeing that they are seeing. In Winter Soldier, Steve is just trying to yellow crayon Bucky out of his mind control.

In Civil War they are just trying to stay alive. But we do see Steve believing Bucky when he says there are more soldiers. He also accepts Bucky's decision to go back on ice.

In Infinity War, Steve seems to be letting Bucky be his own guy on his goat farm (the directors said that he knew Bucky was awake).

So we never see Steve trying to get Bucky to be anything he isn't.

Right?
And 98 percent of fanfic has Steve doing his utmost to treat Bucky like his own person, and the few that have him trying to get Bucky to be his 'old self', he always gets called out.

So...i dunno. Maybe just a Cap hater.

IKR? I was wondering if I'd missed something because I didn't remember there being anything in the movies to show Steve was treating Bucky like that.

DA

Yeah, that sounds more like something out of Steve-bashing fanfics than actual canon.

"like something out of Steve-bashing fanfics than actual canon."

Yup.

Something broken in canon? Fanfiction. Most of the stories show Steve helping Bucky realize he gets to make his own decisions now, and encouraging Bucky to figure out who he is. If Steve doesn’t do that, then Sam steps in and coaches Steve.

tl;dr expand your horizons, OP.

You are reading all the wrong fic and/or not nearly a wide enough variety, because pretty much none of the S/B fic out there has Steve acting like Bucky is exactly the same. And the few where he *is* doing that, he get called out by several characters, including Bucky, and mends his ways.

In the movies...no. Just...no.

Honestly, I wish there were more fics of Steve being the one to get a bit of support from having to deal with Bucky recovering and Bucky's changes.

Most fics have Steve being super supportive all the time. And many of the ones that have him being called out are usually, "Stop your shit, you are being stupid." Instead of fics with Steve struggling to understand this new Bucky and needing his own therapy.

I just want more caregiver burnout fics.

YES!!
I really hate how a lot of fic/authors act like letting Steve have overwhelming emotions, not 'helping' perfectly, and having issues is basically just a plot-point for Natasha or Sam to make fun of him.

ESPECIALLY hate fic where Natasha is (as always) the 'terrifying' cypher that tries to make Steve feel stupid for having emotions.

ARGH.

I read one fic where Steve was struggling to deal with Bucky being different and cutting him out of his life. He was complaining about it to Natasha (his friend) and she slapped him and told him to get over it. I stopped reading that fic.

this is what makes me salivate about writing/reading/rping a Stucky ship, though. steve's illusions about the past break down, he has to mourn his friend all over again, he starts to turn away from bucky just as bucky starts to trust and need him, the guilt from being preserved as "the good soldier" instead of turned into a killing machine (while also starting to wonder if they DID just turn him into a killing machine). just. mmm. *Chef's kiss*
