Tasks that are unexpectedly DAUNTING.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-15 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
So, I decided to trim some curtains today. From "so long they brush the floor" to "they sit at the window-sill". Went to my neighbor, 'cause se's got the sewing machine. Thought it'd be a quick "measure, chop, hem" thing. Figured it'd take around an hour.

ZOMG. Stupid weave of the damn stuff made it IMPOSSIBLE to get accurate measurements (at least for my clumsy self) so I measured, and re-measured, and cut, and RE-trimmed, and pin, and RE-pinned, and ironed, and pinned AGAIN and now, four hours later, CURTAINS. And she kept teasing me being all "wow, I'm faster hemming these than you are just putting the pins in ... but hey, you only have four more to go!"

What was your latest task that was unexpectedly compicated?

Driving is always a daunting task for me. :(

Yes, also car ownership in general. This is the first car I've owned, and it is so complicated. Adulting is hard.

Unnecessarily complicated process for paying invoices through the insurance provider. I have more to do and I always forget which category everything goes under because they can't just name the categories straightforward things. It took me two hours to do the last lot. Getting them in the mail now just fills me with dread.

I thought I could do a report at work almost automatically using Excel, but it's not that simple and I will have to do a lot of cutting and pasting and editing. Not a big deal but ... unexpectedly complicated.

E-mailing people. I'm always afraid I'm going to fuck it up and have to triple check everything.

That's how I feel about the phone. I hate talking on the phone. I'm terrified I'll say the wrong thing and stutter ways I never do in person.

Oh that's fair. E-mail freaks me out more because it's written evidence while telephone conversations feel more transient.

Ah. For me, email is safer because I can plan, and I can delete words and edit until it says exactly what I want. With phones, I have to think on the fly, and I"m not so good at that.

For some reason I'm starting to have trouble with face-to-face conversations which is a little depressing. I'll go into my boss's office knowing exactly what I want to say and I end up saying "Uh... Um... I wanted to talk to you about the thing... oh, right, the nail care... and .... um..." Fortunately my boss is usually pretty nice.

I'm that way about talking on the phone and writing emails. I have to psych myself up before doing either, and then I have to mentally rest for a while afterwards even if it goes well. LOL, anxiety and all that.

I usually feel confident about the content of the message, but I've screwed up reply vs. Reply All or picked the wrong suggested address from my contacts enough times that I'm extra careful about checking who I'm addressing the email to before I hit send.

The hell kind of fabric were your curtains made of?

As for me, getrinf into my gym. The lock was opened by calling a phone number, except now they replaced it with an app with the most generic name possible. I spent ten minutes staring at the app store until someone else pointed me to the right one. And let me in, eliminating the problem for today.

Well, they're double - the inner one's a gauzy whispy thing, where the main problem is trying to get it to STAY STILL while you measure it (and avoid snagging it), and the heavier light-blocking one, which is ... I dunno, some sort of semi-corded blend, where the problem was that the texture of it prevented straight lines from really being a thing. I'm pretty sure there's a GOOD way to do the task in question, but... yeah, I didn't find it. And of course, heavy fabric, table slightly too small to lay it all down on...

sympathies on your gym entry problem - making it difficult to get in sounds like a great way to lose customers

Sympathies about the curtains - thin fabrics are a nightmare on their own, in my experience.Combining them with heavy fabrics sounds like the kind of task I'd just nope out of without even trying. I'm sure there is some trick to it, but that's not something I was ever taught.

To be fair on the gym, it's on a campus and can pretty safely assume that most of its customers are young and eager to use their phones for everything a phone can possibly do. And it's not that I'm not, but naming an apps something five thousand others already did...

Moving my AT&T internet service to a new address while also cancelling cable TV. I couldn't find any way to cancel services on the website when I was trying to use it to set up the move, so I had to call. I had been warned about dealing with AT&T customer service so I had been putting it off, but I hadn't had bad experiences with it before and I figured, other than possible pressure not to cancel cable, it's a pretty straightforward situation, right? Well, it wasn't too bad, but it was still a really frustrating phone call because the sound quality was SO BAD (LOL, American TELEPHONE & Telegraph) and I kept having to ask the woman to repeat herself because everything sounded so garbled. I had been warned about that, too, but still. I realize the person I was talking to was in India, but this wasn't the first time I've spoken on the phone with customer service people in India and didn't have this problem, so what's up AT&T?

Congrats on taming the curtains, anon. Curtains are big buggers and they usually put up a good fight.
