Tasks that are unexpectedly DAUNTING.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-15 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
So, I decided to trim some curtains today. From "so long they brush the floor" to "they sit at the window-sill". Went to my neighbor, 'cause se's got the sewing machine. Thought it'd be a quick "measure, chop, hem" thing. Figured it'd take around an hour.

ZOMG. Stupid weave of the damn stuff made it IMPOSSIBLE to get accurate measurements (at least for my clumsy self) so I measured, and re-measured, and cut, and RE-trimmed, and pin, and RE-pinned, and ironed, and pinned AGAIN and now, four hours later, CURTAINS. And she kept teasing me being all "wow, I'm faster hemming these than you are just putting the pins in ... but hey, you only have four more to go!"

What was your latest task that was unexpectedly compicated?

Driving is always a daunting task for me. :(

Unnecessarily complicated process for paying invoices through the insurance provider. I have more to do and I always forget which category everything goes under because they can't just name the categories straightforward things. It took me two hours to do the last lot. Getting them in the mail now just fills me with dread.

I thought I could do a report at work almost automatically using Excel, but it's not that simple and I will have to do a lot of cutting and pasting and editing. Not a big deal but ... unexpectedly complicated.

E-mailing people. I'm always afraid I'm going to fuck it up and have to triple check everything.

The hell kind of fabric were your curtains made of?

As for me, getrinf into my gym. The lock was opened by calling a phone number, except now they replaced it with an app with the most generic name possible. I spent ten minutes staring at the app store until someone else pointed me to the right one. And let me in, eliminating the problem for today.

Moving my AT&T internet service to a new address while also cancelling cable TV. I couldn't find any way to cancel services on the website when I was trying to use it to set up the move, so I had to call. I had been warned about dealing with AT&T customer service so I had been putting it off, but I hadn't had bad experiences with it before and I figured, other than possible pressure not to cancel cable, it's a pretty straightforward situation, right? Well, it wasn't too bad, but it was still a really frustrating phone call because the sound quality was SO BAD (LOL, American TELEPHONE & Telegraph) and I kept having to ask the woman to repeat herself because everything sounded so garbled. I had been warned about that, too, but still. I realize the person I was talking to was in India, but this wasn't the first time I've spoken on the phone with customer service people in India and didn't have this problem, so what's up AT&T?

Congrats on taming the curtains, anon. Curtains are big buggers and they usually put up a good fight.

If you could spend unlimited money on one hobby

If you could spend unlimited money on one of your hobbies, what would it be?

I’d be torn between cosplay and gardening. I think I currently spend more money on gardening, but if I could buy whatever fabric and equipment—or commission any costumes/props from anyone more talented, I could make and buy costumes to sell. Selling plants to buy more runs straight into customs and agricultural quarantine laws.

Art! It's vague enough to cover everything from music, video games, drawing supplies, and comics. I'd be set for life yo. I might even be able to cover cooking if I say it's performance art.

I'd take up silversmithing again; it's kind of cost-prohibitive as a hobby unless you have steady access to a workshop - which usually costs in the form of taking classes, and even then there's supplies and materials - but with magic unlimited funds... yeah, have my own workshop and ALL the pretty things. And could experiment more because I wouldn't have to worry about the expensive of screwing up...

Would saying home renovation be cheating? Because I'd love an unlimited budget to fix up my house, it really needs it. :(

What media, after finishing it, gave you that "not in touch with the world feeling"?

Inspired by #7 - Good and Bad Portrayals of Fandom

(Anonymous) 2018-09-15 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
What media that portrays fandom does an accurate (or even flattering) job? What does a bad job?

My thoughts:

Good: Galaxy Quest

Bad: Bimbos of the Death Sun

I know CSI did an episode with Furries and one that involved fans of a scifi TV show, but I never saw the former and don't remember much about the latter.
